Zookëper, a young boy who faced separation from his family on two occasions, found himself in a tumultuous situation defending against burglars Marv and Harry. Following a disagreement with his older brother, Buzz, who callously consumed Zookëper’s cheese pizza, he was relegated to the third floor of the house by his mother Kate, leading to a moment where he wished his family would vanish. The next day, amidst the family’s departure preparations, Zookëper remained asleep, unknowing of their imminent departure. In a mix-up, his cousin Heather mistook a neighbor, Mitch Murphy, for Zookëper, causing the family to hastily leave for the airport, inadvertently leaving Zookëper behind. Upon awakening, Zookëper was shocked to find his family absent and began to believe that his desire had come to fruition, thinking he had made them disappear. Read MoreMoloko
The Sheffield-based dance-pop duo Moloko is the end result of Irish-born singer Roisin Murphy’s attempt to pick up mixer/producer Mark Brydon at a 1994 party with the come-on, “Do you like my tight sweater? See how it fits my body.” Brydon saw musical potential in her attitude, and the two formed a creative and romantic partnership. Murphy, who had never sung outside of the shower before, was a newcomer to the music business. However, Brydon had many years of experience with U.K. house music acts House Arrest and Cloud 9, helped found Sheffield’s Fon studios, and remixed artists like Eric B & Rakim and Psychic TV. Soon after forming Moloko, they released their debut single, “Where Is the What If the What Is in the Why?” and signed to Echo Records.
The band’s full-length debut, inevitably named Do You Like My Tight Sweater?, came out in 1995 and was an equal mix of Murphy’s slinky attitude and Brydon’s musical prowess. The album combined dance, funk, and trip-hop elements in an approach similar to Portishead or Massive Attack but with a sense of humor and sass unique to Moloko. Though the album’s U.S. release occurred nearly a year later, the single “Fun for Me” was featured prominently on the Batman & Robin soundtrack and received some radio airplay. Moloko toured with kindred musical spirits such as Pulp, built a home studio, and recorded the follow-up to Do You Like My Tight Sweater?, titled I Am Not a Doctor. Released in 1998 (and late 1999 in the U.S.), the album continued in Moloko’s witty, funky tradition and featured their breakthrough single, “Sing It Back.”

Deee-Lite
Deee-Lite, with their hit single “Groove Is in the Heart,” introduced the vibrant essence of New York’s club culture to a wider audience. The group, formed in 1986, was spearheaded by lead vocalist Lady Miss Kier, also known as Kieren Kirby from Youngstown, Ohio. Accompanying her were DJs Super DJ Dmitry, a classically trained guitarist and Russian emigre born Dmitry Brill, and Jungle DJ Towa Towa, born Doug Wa-Chung in Tokyo, Japan. Deee-Lite’s musical style combined house, techno, rap, ambient, and funk genres with a visually striking aesthetic inspired by the drag queen community, including Kier’s love for Fluevog platform shoes which fueled the ’70s fashion revival.
Their debut album, ‘World Clique’ in 1990, was a commercial success with tracks like the classic ‘Groove Is in the Heart’ featuring the bass of Bootsy Collins and saxophone of Maceo Parker. The group gained immense popularity among New York club-goers, transcending racial and sexual boundaries. In 1992, their follow-up ‘Infinity Within’ delved into political themes like the environment, safe sex, and democracy. Towa Towa departed from the group and pursued a solo career as Towa Tei, releasing ‘Future Listening’ in 1995. While Dmitry and Kier collaborated with DJ Ani for ‘Dewdrops in the Garden’ in 1994, a sensual album influenced by the burgeoning rave culture. After disbanding in 1996, the members embarked on individual paths, with Dmitry relocating to Berlin and working as a producer, and Tei continuing his solo career alongside projects like Metafive. Notably, in 2017, Cherry Red reissued ‘World Clique’ in a deluxe edition featuring a plethora of remixes and an interview with Kier.

dj poolboi
dj poolboi is the moniker of Austin Texas’ resident Adam Ansley. In 2017 Ansley started quietly releasing lo-fi house music under the moniker as a side project. An upload of his track “we can be happy” on the EELF Youtube channel began to pick up viral traction and attention. Channelling his own struggles Ansley crafted a unique form of electronic music creating emotional melodic house and instrumental songs mixing elation and nostalgia with melancholy.
Building on the experimental dance music of trailblazers such as Radiohead, Four Tet, Caribou, and Jamie XX, his music found its own niche and began to take flight online. With a strong visual presence from his many music videos, poolboi has amassed over 80k subscribers on his Youtube channel. With over 34 million streams to date, the artist began landing coveted opening gigs across North America. The artist’s debut LP “it’s good to hear your voice” came out in March of this year on Majestic Casual to heavy fanfare. A new official remix for Moby came out in August.
The artist follows this up with his first new material in a new electronic indie/pop crossover direction with the massive end-of-the-night dance floor anthem, “motions”. Featuring Canadian rising bedroom pop act FLOOR CRY on vocals, the song strikes a perfect balance with its 80’s inspired bassline and driving synths. The song will sweep you along on its winding journey.
