Another Day Dawns
ANOTHER DAY DAWNS continues their ascent as one of the most exciting portents of heavy rock with the release of their new single and Century Media debut, ‘Bitter’. The band (vocalist Dakota Sean, guitarist Tyler Ritter, bassist Jerome Betz and drummer Nick McGeehan) along with producer Steve Sopchak (Ice Nine Kills. Motionless In White) and mixer Jeff Dunne (Brand of Sacrifice, Ice Nine Kills) bring together a pummeling riffiness and unforgettable sense of melody that defines the Wilkes-Barre, PA based band as a force to be reckoned with.
‘Bitter’ is the next step for ANOTHER DAY DAWNS, who began making a racket of their own as high school aged friends in 2010. Countless electric and acoustic shows later, opening for the likes of Sevendust, Starset and Atreyu as well as rock festivals including Aftershock, Blue Ridge and Louder Than Life, they’ve honed themselves into a powerhouse in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. The independent release of their 2018 EP, A Different Life landed them a charting spot on Billboard’s rock charts which solidified their foundation in the active rock market, while the singles ‘Taste of Heaven’ and ‘Forget Me Not’ from 2020’s Stranger EP release were mainstays on the Mediabase Active Rock chart as well as DSP Playlists.
Better Than Ezra
Veterans of the college rock scene of the late 1980s, Better Than Ezra received their big break during the alt-rock explosion of the ’90s — a fitting scenario, as the New Orleans group melds the tunefulness of ’80s jangle pop with the muscle of grunge. This fusion brought Better Than Ezra to the top of the modern rock charts in 1995 when ‘Good’ became a post-grunge staple. A handful of other hits — ‘In the Blood,’ also from their major-label debut Deluxe, plus ‘King of New Orleans’ and ‘Desperately Wanting’ from their second, Friction, Baby — appeared before the group transitioned from major label to independent status early in the 2000s. Better Than Ezra spent the next decades regularly touring and recording, occasionally shining the spotlight on their ’90s work but keeping their focus on new albums such as 2024’s Super Magick.
Originally formed in 1988 as a roots rock outfit with slight elements of country and punk, the group’s first incarnation consisted of four college students from Louisiana State University: Kevin Griffin (vocals, guitar), Joel Rundell (guitar), Tom Drummond (bass), and Cary Bonnecaze (drums). The band’s early performances were expectedly held at college bars and fraternity houses, and their debut cassette-tape recording, 1990’s Surprise, received positive press and comparisons to such alt-punk stalwarts as the Replacements and Dinosaur Jr. Despite these accolades, Better Than Ezra’s future was thrust into doubt when Rundell died by suicide on August 8, 1990.
The remaining bandmates initially opted to go their separate ways after Rundell’s passing, but they reunited as a trio before the end of the year. Deciding that a change of scenery would be helpful, Better Than Ezra relocated to Los Angeles shortly thereafter, where they laid down tracks at a friend’s home studio to create their 1993 independent release, Deluxe. The album continued to raise the band’s profile and eventually drew the attention of several major labels. The trio signed with Elektra Records, and Better Than Ezra’s new label reissued Deluxe two years after its original release. The album spawned their biggest international radio hit with ‘Good,’ which helped push the album to platinum status by the end of 1995. But despite enjoying a hit right off the bat, Bonnecaze opted to leave the group in early 1996 and was replaced by a fellow New Orleans native (who, at the time, was living in San Francisco), Travis McNabb.
Type O Negative
New York goth metal quartet Type O Negative was founded in 1990 by vocalist/bassist/songwriter Peter Steele, guitarist Ken Hickey, keyboardist Josh Silver, and drummer Johnny Kelly. The band emerged from the remnants of thrash band Carnivore, led by Peter Steele and Sal Abruscato. Type O Negative’s music redefined thrash metal with slowed-down tempos, blending misanthropy, misogyny, depression, and vampiric vocals, accompanied by distinctive guitar distortion. Their debut album, ‘Slow, Deep and Hard’ in 1991, featured melancholic dirges like ‘Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity’.
Despite critical backlash for his dark humor, Peter Steele continued to infuse irony and skill in Type O Negative’s music. The band’s sophomore release, ‘Bloody Kisses’ in 1993, incorporated Beatlesque melodies and ironic treatments of gothic themes, earning a cult following and Billboard success. Following the album’s acclaim, drummer Sal Abruscato departed to join Life of Agony, and Johnny Kelly joined Type O Negative. The band’s subsequent albums, ‘October Rust’ (1996) and ‘World Coming Down’ (1999), maintained their dark allure and musical depth.
In 2000, Roadrunner Records released ‘The Least Worst of Type O Negative,’ a compilation showcasing the band’s evolution and unreleased tracks. ‘Life Is Killing Me’ (2003) and ‘Dead Again’ (2007) further solidified Type O Negative’s musical legacy. Tragically, on April 14, 2010, Peter Steele’s passing marked the end of Type O Negative as a performing and recording entity, leaving behind a lasting impact on the goth metal genre. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

Read MoreThrice
Since forming Thrice with guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge in 1998, Kensrue has never been one to back down from a mental fight. This mood is set by the opening synth-driven number “Color of the Sky,” which sounds well-suited to accompany the closing credits of the Stranger Things season finale. Think Flying Lotus giving way to Elbow and setting the listener down in a new dimension. A self-recorded effort, Horizons/East conveys a palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility. Scott Evans (Sleep, Kowloon Walled City, Yautja, Town Portal) is on mixing duties, conjuring a landscape of gloom, glow, and glory.
On “Buried in the Sun,” which had the working title of “D.C. Bass,” the band’s fondness for bands like Fugazi and Frodus comes to the fore. In it, we learn that there’s a military-industrial complex, a vast apparatus of legal bullying, to take on (I saw the fire on the television/the DoD or the CIA), but the threat to our mental health in acknowledging our own country’s participation in the terror trade is both immersive and interior. The psychic struggle will often come down to what we’re doing with our tools, how we hold what passes before our minds in dreams and on screens. There’s a lot to take in and a lot to be mad about, but Horizons/East invites us to slow tape and see.
Thousand Foot Krutch
Thousand Foot Krutch is a hard rock trio hailing from Peterborough, Canada. The band made their debut back in 1995, consisting of Trevor McNevan, Joel Bruyere, and Steve Augustine. Initially, Thousand Foot Krutch brought a fresh perspective to the nu-metal scene by infusing it with elements of praise and worship. Their early success came with the release of their debut LP, Set It Off, in 2000 under the label Diamante. Set It Off featured a mix of covers and original tracks, drawing comparisons to bands like P.O.D. and Papa Roach. As the years progressed, Thousand Foot Krutch continued to evolve and hone their sound, as seen in their subsequent albums like Phenomenon in 2003. Noteworthy is the band’s versatility, with band members McNevan and Augustine also exploring a pop-punk side project named FM Static.
The band’s musical journey saw significant milestones with the release of albums like The Art of Breaking in 2005, which marked a shift towards a heavier rock sound. This album, produced by Arnold Lanni, marked their entry into the mainstream music scene with a debut on the Billboard 200 chart. Thousand Foot Krutch’s persistence and talent propelled them to further success with albums like The Flame in All of Us in 2007 and Welcome to the Masquerade in 2009, both achieving high chart rankings. Their independent release, The End Is Where We Begin in 2012, showcased the band’s maturity and commitment to their craft. Throughout their career, Thousand Foot Krutch stayed true to their roots, delivering powerful performances and connecting with audiences through their authentic and emotive music.
