Read MorePat Benatar
Pat Benatar emerged at the dawn of the 1980s with a sound that mixed the soaring power chords of arena rock with a combination of tough grit and mainstream pop sense. Songs like 1979’s “Heartbreaker” and “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” from her acclaimed sophomore album Crimes of Passion, made her an international star ahead of 1981’s chart-topping Precious Time. During the front half of the decade, Benatar became an icon of the early MTV era, earning four Grammy Awards and stringing together a series of gritty pop anthems like “Love Is a Battlefield” and “We Belong,” major hits that remain motivational classics and staples of classic rock radio. After 1985’s “Invincible,” her popularity began to falter somewhat and her output subsequently fell off during the ’90s. After 2003’s Go, Benatar entered a recording hiatus that was eventually broken by a handful of stand-alone singles at the end of the 2010s. She also published a memoir, Between a Heart and a Rock Place.
A native New Yorker, Patricia Andrzejewski was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on January 10, 1953 and raised in the nearby town of Lindenhurst on Long Island. She began her career as a lounge singer in Richmond, Virginia where she and her first husband, Dennis Benatar, a member of the U.S. Army, were stationed. While singing as part of a lounge band called Coxon’s Army, Benatar released a regionally distributed independent single, 1974’s “Day Gig,” before relocating to New York City. During the latter half of the ’70s, she built up her profile through regular nightclub appearances at the famed comedy club Catch a Rising Star while recording jingles on the side. By 1978, she’d attracted both management and label attention and soon signed a deal with Chrysalis Records. Around this same time, she and Dennis divorced, though she would continue to use his surname for the remainder of her career.
A stellar band formed around Benatar led by guitarist Neil Giraldo, a musician who became her primary collaborator and eventually her husband. She scored a hit right out of the gate with her 1979 debut In the Heat of the Night, which yielded two popular radio singles “Heartbreaker” and “I Need a Lover” (the latter of which was written by a then-unknown John Mellencamp). Benatar’s mix of fiery rock songs and pop balladry presented a winning mix and her sophomore effort, 1980’s Crimes of Passion, more than delivered on the debut’s promise. A critical and commercial success, the album went multi-platinum behind hits like “Treat Me Right, “You Better Run,” and her signature song, “Hit Me with Your Best Shot.” A Grammy Award (the first of four) for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance further bolstered her rising star status ahead of 1981’s Precious Time, her first U.S. chart-topper, and its lead single “Fire and Ice.”

Lifehouse
Led by singer/songwriter Jason Wade, Lifehouse emerged in the early 2000s with a commercial blend of pop/rock melody and throaty, post-grunge vocals. Wade, who originally tagged the band Blyss upon its inception in 1995, was raised by missionary parents in a variety of locales. He eventually settled in Los Angeles with his mother and took a keen interest in songwriting. Bassist Sergio Andrade lived next door, and the two spent hours in Wade’s garage, fine-tuning their original compositions and laying the brickwork for Lifehouse’s accessible sound. Those rehearsals paved the way for a self-released album, Diff’s Lucky Band, as well as a series of shows at church worship services. Lifehouse resisted the temptation to become a full-fledged Christian band, however, and instead signed a contract with Dreamworks Records as an alternative rock trio. Drummer Jon Palmer completed the lineup.
No Name Face marked the band’s official debut in the fall of 2000. The album enjoyed double-platinum sales on the strength of “Hanging by a Moment,” which was the most played radio track of 2001. In a market dominated by teen pop, Lifehouse stood out as champions of guitar-based music, and their unexpected success drew them back inside the studio to work on a follow-up album. With Brendan O’Brien handling production duties, Wade led his band through the recording of Stanley Climbfall during the spring and summer of 2002. The record was released on Dreamworks the following September, but it failed to match the sales of its predecessor. Lifehouse’s lineup splintered soon after, with Andrade exiting the group to pursue alternate projects.
Wade pieced together a revised Lifehouse and returned in early 2005 with a self-titled third album. For the touring that followed its release, Wade and percussionist Rick Woolstenhulme, Jr. were joined by former AM Radio bassist/vocalist Bryce Soderberg, who remained with the group for its return to alternative rock on 2007’s Who We Are. Lifehouse and Who We Are proved to be fairly popular releases, with both albums going gold thanks to a trio of Top 40 singles: “First Time,” “You and Me,” and “Whatever It Takes.” Smoke & Mirrors appeared three years later, sporting a collaboration with rapper/songwriter Kevin Rudolf on the leadoff single “Halfway Gone.” Debuting at number six on the Billboard Top 200, Smoke & Mirrors was a successful record and, after a supporting tour, the group entered the studio once again with producer Jude Cole (he helmed S&M) to record its sixth album. Entitled Almeria, the record appeared in December 2012; it was preceded by the single “Between the Raindrops,” a duet with pop singer Natasha Bedingfield.
Almeria didn’t make many waves on the charts — it reached 55 on Billboard’s Top 200, whereas Smoke & Mirrors peaked at number six — and the group didn’t support it with a tour. By the summer, Lifehouse announced they’d left their label and were entering a hiatus. Each member pursued their own project — Wade worked on a solo album, Soderberg started a band called KOMOX, Woolstenhulme, Jr. played with the Goo Goo Dolls — but by 2014, they had reunited. In May of 2015, they resurfaced with Out of the Wasteland, produced by Jude Cole and released by Ironworks. It debuted at number one on the Top Independent Albums chart. In early summer of 2017, Lifehouse released their first compilation, Greatest Hits, after which the band toured America with Switchfoot. Andrew Leahey, Rovi

Kelontae Gavin
Discovered as a high-school student via social media, Kelontae Gavin is a hit-making contemporary gospel singer and worship leader who broke into the mainstream with 2018’s “No Ordinary Worship,” which appeared on his debut album, The Higher Experience. Gavin continued to be a steady presence on the gospel charts with subsequent efforts The N.O.W. Experience (2021) and Testify (2023). The energetic contemporary gospel vocalist from Ridgeville, South Carolina unwittingly launched his career with a performance of Rev. Paul Jones’ “I Won’t Complain.” Recorded in his high school cafeteria in 2014 and uploaded to YouTube, the interpretation caught the attention of Atlanta-based pastor and music executive Marquis Boone. Gavin signed with Marquis Boone Enterprises in early 2016 and, through Boone’s affiliation with the long-running Tyscot label, released his debut single, “Higher,” that November. The song was written by his mother, Priscilla Smalls, and produced by Grammy winner Myron Butler. Around that time, Gavin made his nationally televised debut on BET’s Joyful Noise. In 2018, he returned with his full-length debut, The Higher Experience, which peaked at number two on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. Included on the album was the single “No Ordinary Worship,” which reached number four on the Hot Gospel Songs chart. Gavin’s sophomore effort, The N.O.W. Experience, appeared in 2021 and included the chart-topping “Hold Me Close” and guest spots from Isaiah Templeton and rapper Aaron Cole. Two years later, he returned with Testify, an uplifting 15-song set featuring contributions from Jekalyn Carr, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Marquis Boone, Amber Smith, Pastor Kendall McDowell, and Priscilla Smalls. The LP included the gospel radio hits “Take Rest” and “Live Again.” ~ Andy Kellman
