Stokley

Stokley, a seasoned R&B singer and instrumentalist, enjoyed nearly a quarter-century of success with the group Mint Condition before embarking on his solo career. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota on July 15, 1967, Stokley Williams showed early musical talent, learning percussion instruments at the young age of four. Co-founding Mint Condition in the early ’80s with high school friends, Stokley served as the lead singer and drummer. The band’s breakthrough came in 1989 when they were discovered by Minneapolis R&B legends Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, leading to a record deal and hit singles from their debut album, Meant to Be Mint.
Stokley’s versatility shone beyond Mint Condition, with credits on albums by Janet Jackson, Sounds of Blackness, Johnny Gill, Color Me Badd, and collaborations with Prince, Elton John, and Toni Braxton. His talent was recognized with a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance in 2011, and his productions and vocals featured on albums by artists like Kelly Price and Wale. In 2017, Stokley finally released his solo album Introducing Stokley under his name, showcasing his outstanding musical abilities. Case

A native New Yorker, Case started his music career in the ’90s, providing backup vocals on albums for well-known R&B artists such as Usher. He was signed to the Def Jam label in the mid-’90s and released his debut self-titled album in 1996, followed by Personal Conversation in 1999 and Open Letter in 2001. On Open Letter, Case crafted each song with a specific person in mind, including a dedicated track for his daughter called ‘A Song for Skye’ and tracks like ‘Love of My Life’ and ‘Shine’ inspired by the legendary Stevie Wonder. Collaborating with renowned producers like Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Tim & Bob, Case ventured into entrepreneurship by launching his own label, Indigo Blue, after requesting to be released from his Def Jam contract in 2004. The O’Jays

Walter Williams and Eddie Levert first met when they were the ages of 6 and 7, respectively. As teenagers in Canton, Ohio, they formed a band originally consisting of Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. In 1963, the band took the name “The O’Jays” in tribute to Cleveland radio disc jockey Eddie O’Jay. Several members have changed, but the core, original lead singers, Eddie Levert and Walter Williams, continue to front the group.
In 1972, Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters with whom the O’Jays had been working for several years, signed the group to their Philadelphia International label. With this magic formula, The O’Jays scored the first #1 hit, “Backstabbers.” Subsequently, they succeeded with various chart-topping pop and R&B singles including “Love Train”, “For The Love of Money”, “I Love Music”, “Darlin’ Darlin’ Baby”, “Livin’ For The Weekend” and “Use Ta Be My Girl”.
The O’Jays were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005 and were honored with BET’s Life Time Achievement Award in 2009. In 2013, they were inducted into the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame. Eddie Levert Sr., Walter Williams Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant, who joined the group in 1995, continue to thrill fans today. Formed at Kentucky State University in 1976, MIDNIGHT STAR began as a self-contained band and quickly earned a strong live performance reputation. A 1978 New York City showcase inspired Solar Records chief Dick Griffey to sign the group; and early 80’s albums like The Beginning, Standing Together, and Victory gave MIDNIGHT STAR a chance to hone their chops. In 1983 the Certified Double Platinum No Parking on the Dance Floor album established MIDNIGHT STAR as world-renowned songwriters, producers, and entertainers. The technofunk classic “Freak-A­Zoid”, the title cut “No Parking on the Dance Floor”, the smooth “Wet My Whistle”, album cuts like “Electricity” and “Slow Jam “thrusted the group to stardom.
The group’s passion has shown up in Platinum and Gold as they’ve poured out top 10 and No. 1 hits. The Planetary Invasion LP of 1985 took them to No. 1 with “Operator” and the sizzling “Curious”. Ron Broomfield, aka Eugene Wilde, seemed ready to become a megastar in the mid-’80s. The Miami-based vocalist, who had formerly been with Life, had a resonant, authoritative voice and very confident manner. He scored number one R&B hits in 1984 and 1985 recording for Philly W. Records. “Gotta Get You Home Tonight” and “Don’t Say No Tonight” were lyrically predictable, but expertly produced and sang with plenty of suggestiveness and sentimental appeal. Wilde scored one more Top Ten hit with “Diana” in 1986, but switched to MCA and soon lost his momentum.
