Rock Legends

#0908: Lynyrd Skynyrd | The quintessential Southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, rose to prominence in 1973, full of regional pride and stressing cocky, boisterous hard rock as opposed to the Allman Brothers' more open-ended blues. Their signature song, “Freebird,” complete with it fiery five-minute, three-guitar solo, is easily the most requested live song in existence. When the band broke up in 1977, after Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines died in a plane crash, rock suffered a tremendous loss.

The music has its roots in earlier subgenres like Western, honky tonk, rockabilly and progressive country, and is characterized by a blend of rock and folk rhythms, country instrumentation and introspective lyrics. The movement began as a reaction to the slick production and limiting structures of the Nashville sound developed by Chet Atkins and other record producers.

#102: Jimi Hendrix | Jimi Hendrix earned three UK top ten hits with “Hey Joe,” “Purple Haze,” and “The Wind Cries Mary.” He achieved fame in the U.S. after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. In 1968, his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the U.S. and it was his most commercially successful release, and his only number one album. As the world's highest-paid performer, he headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. Jimi Hendrix was arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music.
