Because the age of 27, it tends to be when pop stars find their first flush of fame. And that fame, that first stage of fame, is incredibly dangerous.

Of course, they need to know the techniques of drum fills, but also, a truly great drummer needs to have passion and have something unique about them that makes them stand out, something in them before they even approach the instrument. Through practice anyone can learn technically to play the drums, but if you've got that innate connection to the rhythm, the drive, the passion, that's when that kind of talent really shines through.

#1309: Doo-Wop Extra | Doo-wop is a genre of acapella rhythm and blues music, which originated in the 1930s and '40s in African American communities in big US cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, and it's a capella because the focus is on vocal harmonies and this beautiful layering between a lead vocal and these strong voices underneath, which mimic instruments. There's the sound of bass or reed or string instruments, and also this idea that the doo-wop sound comes from mimicking drums.

#1311: Mod | Mod, from the word modernist, is a subculture that began in late 1950s London and spread throughout Great Britain, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries. It continues today on a smaller scale. Focused on music and fashion, the subculture has its roots in a small group of stylish London-based young men and women in the late 1950s who were termed modernists because they listened to modern jazz. Elements of the mod subculture include fashion (often tailor-made suits); music (including soul, rhythm and blues, ska and mainly jazz) and motor scooters (usually Lambretta or Vespa). In the mid-1960s when they started to fade out, the subculture listened to rock groups with jazz and blues influences such as the Who and Small Faces.

#1312: Punk Rock | Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in 1950s rock and roll and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the corporate nature of mainstream 1970s rock music. They typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles with stripped-down instrumentation. Lyricism in punk typically revolves around anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian themes. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produce recordings and distribute them through independent labels.
