Anamorphic Freddie Mercury Mural Unveiled at Wembley Park for His 80th Birthday

A 30-foot anamorphic mural of Freddie Mercury has gone up at Wembley Park to mark what would have been the Queen lead singer’s 80th birthday. Called “I’m Mr Mercury,” the piece spans all 58 of the site’s Spanish Steps and is designed so the singer’s face only comes into full focus when viewed from a specific spot roughly 65 feet away.

British street artist Frank Styles produced the work, painting it in four separate sections before merging them into the single sweeping image now stretched across the steps. Viewed from any other angle, the portrait scatters into disconnected streaks and patches of colour rather than a recognizable face.

• Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara on 5 September 1946 in Zanzibar, would have turned 80 on 5 September 2026; he died in 1991 at age 45.
• Queen performed 10 concerts at the venue, then called the Empire Pool, between 1978 and 1984.
• The band played Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in July 1985 and returned for two sold-out shows the following summer.
• The mural is free to view around the clock and stays up through December 2026.

What Details Are Hidden in the Mercury Mural

Beyond the central portrait, the artwork weaves in several nods to Mercury’s personal life. A koi carp design pays tribute to his fondness for Japan and to the Japanese-style pond at his London residence.

Winged female figures scattered through the piece reference Mercury’s Virgo zodiac sign, echoing a symbol he once used on the Queen crest, an emblem he designed himself by blending each band member’s star sign into one image. Lines of lyrics and quotations also trail up the steps in the direction of Wembley Stadium, tying the visual tribute back to his songwriting.

Why Wembley Park Was Chosen for the Tribute

The Spanish Steps form a walking route between Wembley Stadium and the OVO Arena, previously known as Wembley Arena, both sites tied to Mercury’s history of performing in the area with Queen. Claudio Giambrone, who commissioned and curated the installation for Wembley Park, said Mercury’s connection to the location runs deeper than any one gig.

“Freddie Mercury’s relationship with Wembley goes far beyond a single famous performance,” Giambrone said. “We wanted to create something that gives fans a new place in Wembley where they can come together and remember him.”

Styles said Mercury’s own training as a graphic designer shaped how he approached the commission. “As a trained graphic designer himself, Freddie was very aware and precise about the visual feel and so I have endeavoured to follow his ethos in the conscious creation of this mural,” Styles said.
