Billy Joel Reveals He Underwent Brain Surgery – New Health Update

Billy Joel has revealed on his SiriusXM channel, The Billy Joel Channel, that he underwent surgery to have a shunt implanted in his brain to manage normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), the condition he first went public with in May 2025. Joel, 77, said the operation has since made a noticeable difference in his memory, his balance and his overall ability to function.

• NPH develops when excess cerebrospinal fluid collects in the brain’s ventricles, raising pressure that can affect hearing, vision, balance and memory.

What Doctors Told Billy Joel About Performing

Joel said his physicians connected years of loud, high-volume performing to repeated, concussion-like trauma to his brain. He recalled being told that his line of work, playing rock and roll at high volume, was effectively giving him something similar to a concussion at every show, and that the resulting nerve damage risked costing him more brain cells the longer he kept touring.

Joel said he first became aware something was wrong when his sense of balance started to slip, describing the feeling as being on a boat and unable to stay steady on his feet. That symptom sent him to a neurologist, who diagnosed him with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition once commonly referred to as water on the brain.

Why Joel Initially Turned Down the Shunt Surgery

Joel admitted he balked when doctors first laid out what the procedure would involve, recalling their explanation that they would need to drill into his skull and place a shunt inside his brain. His initial reaction, he said, was simply, “Nah, I think I’ll pass on that.”

He said he reconsidered after researching the surgery himself and learning it could ease his balance problems and sharpen his memory, adding that he didn’t want to “lose my marbles” and found it hard to separate normal aging from symptoms of his condition. That research convinced him to move forward with the shunt implant.

How Billy Joel Is Recovering

Joel said the surgery delivered real results, telling listeners his memory improved, his balance got somewhat better and his day-to-day functioning improved as well. He said his medical team wants him to avoid excess stress during recovery, so he has been keeping up with physical therapy and following his doctors’ instructions.

Joel used the update to put fans at ease about his health. “I’m OK,” he said. “I want people to know, don’t worry about me. I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m still here.”
