Bob Dylan Adds Jimmie Vaughan as Fifth Guest Guitarist on US Tour
Bob Dylan capped his US tour by bringing blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan into his live lineup, the fifth guitarist change of an unusually fluid run of shows. Vaughan, the brother of late blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, joined Dylan onstage at the Ascend Federal Credit Union Amphitheater in Nashville, Tennessee on August 1, 2026.
Vaughan opened the Nashville show as the supporting act before rejoining Dylan’s band for part of the headline set. He played on “False Prophet” and a cover of Bo Diddley’s “I Can Tell,” then returned to the stage for the penultimate song of the night, “Goodbye Jimmy Reed.”
Jimmie Vaughan’s History Playing With Bob Dylan
Vaughan’s connection to Dylan goes back nearly two decades. He supported Dylan on a 2006 tour, and in 2024 he sat in with Dylan’s band in Austin, Texas, stepping in for guitarist Doug Lancio for nine songs.
How Bob Dylan’s Guitarist Rotation Unfolded
Vaughan’s addition was the last in a string of quiet guitarist swaps that ran through Dylan’s 2026 tour. Jazz guitarist Julian Lage was the first to join, taking over from Lancio, who had been part of Dylan’s band since 2021.
Three weeks after Lage came aboard, guitarists Jad Tariq and Joel Paterson were also folded into the rotation without fanfare. Fans following the tour have speculated that Tariq was brought in to cover dates when Lage’s own solo commitments kept him away from Dylan’s shows.

What Fans Said About Vaughan’s Nashville Performance
Dylan superfan Henry Bernstein reviewed the Nashville show and described Vaughan’s playing as tentative at first before growing bolder as the set went on. Bernstein wrote that Vaughan “started off quiet but then got more and more brave with his solos.”
Bernstein also recounted a moment during “False Prophet” when Vaughan moved close to Dylan onstage. He wrote that “Jimmie got very close to Bob, was playing to him and Bob was smiling, laughing and actually singing some pointed lyrics at Jimmie.”
What’s Next for Bob Dylan
Dylan, who is 85 years old, is set to return to the road for a European tour spanning October, November, and December 2026. It remains to be seen which guitarists will join him for that leg of shows.
