Donnie Iris, the singer whose voice carried “Ah! Leah!” and “The Rapper” to radio staples across generations, died on Monday, October 26, 2026, at age 83. His death came after a three-year fight with bladder cancer, and arrived just weeks after he told fans he was stepping away from touring for good.

  • Iris was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2023, shortly after a sold-out concert marking his 80th birthday.
  • He canceled a June 2023 Youngstown show alongside REO Speedwagon because of the diagnosis, then returned to the stage in March 2024 after completing chemotherapy.
  • On October 9, 2026, he posted a retirement letter announcing he would no longer perform live due to ongoing health problems.
  • His last concert took place September 28, 2026, at the opening night of Citizens Live at The Wylie, a newly opened Pittsburgh venue.
  • He was born Dominic Ierace on February 28, 1943; accounts vary on his birthplace, citing New Castle, Beaver Falls, and Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.

Donnie Iris’s Final Show and Retirement Announcement

Iris’s farewell performance on September 28 came on the opening night of Citizens Live at The Wylie, a brand-new concert venue in Pittsburgh, the city he long called home. He reportedly performed that night seated in a chair, having undergone radiation treatment earlier that same afternoon.

Former bandmate Mark Avsec recalled the show to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, saying “he sang like a bird that night.” Avsec added that Iris disliked having to sit through the performance but pushed through the discomfort of his spreading cancer because he wanted to be there for the audience.

Less than two weeks later, on October 9, Iris shared a written statement confirming his retirement from live shows. In it, he thanked his daughters, his family, his musicians and crew, and the fans who had supported his career, writing that while he would no longer perform, “the memories, the music, and the connections we have built together will always remain close to my heart.”

Donnie Iris’s Music Career: The Jaggerz, Wild Cherry and the Cruisers

Iris’s recording career stretched back more than five decades before his death. He first reached national audiences as a member of the Jaggerz, whose 1970 single “The Rapper” climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1978 he joined Wild Cherry, the band behind “Play That Funky Music,” working as a keyboardist and backing vocalist. A year later, in 1979, he teamed with keyboardist Mark Avsec to launch Donnie Iris and the Cruisers, rounding out the group with guitarist Marty Lee Hoenes, bassist Albritton McClain and drummer Kevin Valentine.

The band’s 1980 single “Ah! Leah!” became closely associated with Pittsburgh and remained a defining song of Iris’s career through his final performance decades later.

Tributes to Donnie Iris

Joe Grushecky, frontman of the Iron City Houserockers, spoke to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about his longtime colleague. “For my money, he was the most beloved Pittsburgh musician of all time,” Grushecky said. “I don’t know anyone who was loved more than Donnie. He just had that warmth about him, and it came through in his performance.”

Joe Vitale Jr., drummer for Donnie Iris & the Cruisers, announced the death in a Facebook post on October 26, describing Iris as someone who “always had an infectious smile, incredible energy and a wonderous personality.” Vitale referred to him by the nickname “King Cool.”
