Fleetwood Mac Documentary ‘The Chain’ Gets Title and Release Date
Apple TV has locked in January 29, 2027 as the worldwide launch date for Fleetwood Mac: The Chain, marking the first time the band has granted full cooperation for a documentary about their history. The film arrives directed by Frank Marshall and lands just ahead of the 50th anniversary of the band’s landmark album Rumours, which was released February 4, 1977.
- Global premiere date: Friday, January 29, 2027, on Apple TV
- Director: Frank Marshall, a five-time Academy Award nominee and Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award recipient
- Rumours anniversary: 50 years since its February 4, 1977 release
- First announced: November 2024, meaning the title and date followed roughly two years later
Who Appears in Fleetwood Mac: The Chain?
The documentary draws on new interviews with surviving members Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, combined with archival material of Christine McVie, who passed away in 2022. Production credits list The Kennedy/Marshall Company and White Horse Pictures as the companies behind the film, with Nigel Sinclair, Nicholas Ferrall, Jeanne Elfant Festa and Aly Parker named as producers. Mark Monroe of Diamond Docs serves as writer and executive producer.
Why Is the Film Called ‘The Chain’?
The title borrows from “The Chain,” the lone composition on Rumours bearing songwriting credit for all five band members at the time, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. The documentary itself is built around that sense of a shared, unbreakable history, tracking the band from its earliest configuration with Buckingham and Nicks through decades of change up to the current day.
The narrative begins with the moment Mick Fleetwood first heard “Frozen Love,” a track from the Buckingham Nicks album, during a session at Sound City Studio in Los Angeles around New Year’s Eve 1974. That encounter led Fleetwood to recruit Buckingham, and then Nicks, into the group. Fleetwood described the impact of hearing Buckingham’s playing to Rolling Stone, saying it was “what hit me first, and it hit me hard,” and that “that hour and a half spent in Sound City changed everything.”
Promotional materials for the project point to Fleetwood Mac’s commercial scale, citing worldwide sales topping 220 million records. The film is positioned as an inside account of how the band’s internal strains, shifting lineup and creative partnerships produced music that has endured for half a century.
Could the Documentary Signal a Fleetwood Mac Reunion?
Comments from Lindsey Buckingham made this past August have stirred speculation about what might follow the film’s release. Buckingham said that he and Stevie Nicks are “talking all the time now,” and predicted that “next year should be a pretty interesting year… because I think quite a few things will reveal themselves.” He stopped short of confirming any specific plans, whether a tour, new recordings or something else.
Separately, Fleetwood Mac has not performed live since 2019. Buckingham, Nicks and Mick Fleetwood are each reported to be working on individual solo albums that could surface sometime in 2027, around the same period as the documentary’s release.
