Nikki Sixx Addresses Motley Crue’s Use of Backing Tracks: “We Play 100 Percent Live”

What Nikki Sixx Said About Motley Crue’s Backing Tracks

When a fan on X asked directly why Motley Crue relies on backing tracks, Sixx explained the practice by referencing another act. He wrote that after watching Queen use backing tracks to help pull off “Bohemian Rhapsody” in concert, the band realized it could incorporate sounds it otherwise could not produce live, naming orchestral parts and saxophones as examples.

Sixx said those extra layers are timed to line up with what the band is actually performing onstage. “We do play 100 percent live,” he wrote, adding that the arrangement benefits the audience and lets the band recreate its studio recordings in concert. He described the setup as “a win win for us.”

A separate fan pressed the issue further, asking why the band doesn’t perform entirely live. Sixx’s answer was blunt: “We do. You were lied to. Sorry.”

Why Fans Keep Questioning Motley Crue’s Live Shows

Scrutiny over the band’s live setup dates back to a 2022 concert in Kansas City, where footage circulated appearing to show a backing track running under the drum parts. In the clip, drummer Tommy Lee is seen missing the count-in for “Looks That Kill” as he hurried to get back behind his kit.

The debate intensified in 2023 when former guitarist Mick Mars filed a lawsuit against the band following his exit from the lineup. As part of that case, Mars alleged that his former bandmates, and Nikki Sixx specifically, had not played their instruments live during the group’s 2022 touring.

Mars ultimately testified under oath that the claim about Sixx not playing bass live was false. Motley Crue prevailed in the case in January 2026, when an arbitrator dismissed every allegation Mars had brought and ordered him to pay damages to the band.

John 5 Has Also Pushed Back on Miming Claims

Guitarist John 5 addressed similar accusations in 2024 after fans questioned footage of his onstage playing. He posted a video on Instagram walking through a pick-flipping trick he uses mid-song and demonstrating the hammer-on and pull-off technique behind the single-string riff in “Too Fast for Love,” explaining that the moves in question were simply guitar fundamentals rather than evidence of miming.

Speaking on the Thinking About Guitar podcast earlier this year, John 5 said every member of Motley Crue plays each note themselves during shows. He noted that backing vocals, siren effects, and song intros are the elements piped in from track, while the actual instrumental performances come from the band live.

Motley Crue’s Current Tour

Motley Crue is in the midst of “The Return of Carnival of Sins” tour across North America, marking both the 20th anniversary of the original Carnival of Sins run and the band’s 45th anniversary overall. Tesla and Extreme are serving as support acts on the trek. The tour picked back up on August 12, 2026 in Alpharetta, Georgia, following a break, with shows currently scheduled through September 26, 2026 in Ridgefield, Washington.
