Legendary musician Patti Smith, renowned for her contributions to rock and literature, recently faced a challenging moment on stage during a performance in São Paulo, Brazil. The incident occurred amidst her presentations with the Soundwalk Collective, a Berlin-based group she has collaborated with for years. Smith was forced to cut short a performance due to a severe bout of dizziness caused by a post-migraine condition. Addressing the incident, Smith reassured fans and the media, stating emphatically that she was “fine,” and underscored that the situation had been “grossly exaggerated” across various media outlets and social media platforms.

Smith’s fall took place approximately 30 minutes into her recital performance on climate change. Audience members reported that she appeared to try to brace herself using a microphone stand before falling. Onlookers were concerned, as Smith was quickly assisted and taken offstage in a wheelchair. She returned shortly after, still displaying commitment to her performance and fans, apologizing for not being able to complete the event. The singer poignantly managed to sing ‘Wing’ and ‘Because the Night’ a capella, a gesture that was met with affection and encouragement from the audience, who responded with cheers of love and support.

Soundwalk Collective, alongside Smith, released a statement expressing gratitude for the audience’s understanding and emphasized the musician’s determination to perform despite her condition. They explained that Smith had been suffering from a migraine for several days leading up to the performance and thanked attendees for their patience. The singer mentioned she was looked after by exceptional medical professionals following the incident.

In São Paulo for a dual-night presentation of the ‘Correspondences’ project, Smith’s collaboration with Soundwalk Collective has resulted in multiple works since their partnership began in 2016. Her dedication to continuing her artistic and musical engagements, even at such a challenging moment, speaks volumes about her resilience and love for her craft. Yet Smith, always known for her candidness, implored that the narrative surrounding her fall not be sensationalized, especially given the global issues of greater urgency.
