Primus, the iconic funk metal band known for its experimental soundscapes, is making headlines once again with the announcement of a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl release for their latest track, “Little Lord Fentanyl.” This release is poised as a collector’s item, available in four unique color variants — burgundy, gold, grey, and white. Set to make its way into the hands of eager fans on August 15, it will be accessible at retail outlets and during the band's expansive “Onward & Upward” summer tour which kicks off on July 5. The 7-inch serves not only as a physical addition to fans' collections but also reintroduces “Duchess (And The Proverbial Mind Spread)” in a live format as its B-side, recorded at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia. This track originally hails from their 1998 “Brown Album.”

The release holds additional significance as it marks the debut studio recording with John Hoffman, the new powerhouse drummer who joined Primus following an extensive audition campaign humorously dubbed the “Interstellar Drum Derby.” Hoffman's inclusion in the band has re-energized Primus, infusing a vibrant new energy that is evident in both the new recording and live performances. His winning performance during the audition was notably distinguished by his choice to play “Duchess,” which ultimately secured his position with the band. Frontman Les Claypool has praised Hoffman's drumming skills, describing him as “fiery, cheerful, [and] octopus-like” — qualities that he believes have breathed new life into the band.

Moreover, “Little Lord Fentanyl” features guest vocals from the revered Maynard James Keenan, known for his work with Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Critics have described the single as both transgressive and comforting, a testament to Primus's ability to blend various musical elements into a unique sonic experience. This launch underscores Primus's return to the music scene with their first new song in over three years.

The timing of this release coincides with Primus's intensive touring schedule. Following their recent “Sessanta” tour with A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, they are set to embark on “Onward & Upward.” This tour will span 24 cities, hitting major venues across the United States. Along the way, they will be joined by Ty Segall and MonoNeon, adding further diversity to the concert experience. Noteworthy stops include the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, and a celebratory stand in Sacramento.

The backstory behind the departure of the previous drummer, Tim “Herb” Alexander, adds a layer of depth to the band's current trajectory. Alexander had a long-standing history with Primus but departed citing a loss of passion for playing. His candid account of needing to re-assess his priorities underscores the personal trials musicians often face. This shift opened the opportunity for Hoffman's entry, whose skillful drumming and fresh perspective have been embraced by both the band and fans alike.

The 7-inch vinyl release is more than just a new song or a live recording. It's a symbol of Primus's evolution and their continued influence in the music world. As they hit the road, audiences are eager to experience the new dynamics live. The tour represents both a journey and a homecoming for the band, re-visiting cities with the prospect of newfound strength and musical innovation, emblematic of their continuous “onward and upward” philosophy. This release and the subsequent tour highlight Primus's commitment to creativity, collaboration, and the relentless pursuit of musical excellence.
