Sean Ono Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl Welcome Son Aurelius, John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s First Grandchild

Sean Ono Lennon and his longtime partner Charlotte Kemp Muhl announced on Instagram on the evening of Tuesday, September 1, 2026, that they have welcomed a baby boy. The couple named their son Aurelius, and he is the first grandchild of the late John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

How Julian Lennon Announced His New Nephew

Before Sean’s own post went up, his brother Julian Lennon, John Lennon’s son from his first marriage to Cynthia Lennon, is reported to have broken the news himself in a Facebook post that no longer appears online. In it, Julian said that while traveling in London he “became an uncle,” and he congratulated Sean and Charlotte on the arrival of their “Beautiful Boy,” a nod to the John Lennon song written for Sean.

Charlotte Kemp Muhl on Life With a Newborn

Charlotte Kemp Muhl posted her own reflection on new parenthood, writing, “We made a human! Am convinced DNA is agentic alien quaternary code.” She described the disorientation of sleep deprivation and said she has already been playing music by Aphex Twin and Stravinsky for Aurelius. She also joked about the messier side of newborn life, writing, “Meconium is crazy.”

A Lennon Family Not Untouched by Old Rumors

Sean is the only child John Lennon and Yoko Ono had together, while Julian is John’s son from his earlier marriage. Both brothers have pushed back publicly on suggestions that they don’t get along. Julian said in 2023 that the two have “never had a fight in our life,” while Sean said in 2025 that he and Julian are “best buddies” and asked fans to stop comparing them.

Sean Ono Lennon’s Recent Comments on His Father’s Legacy

Aurelius arrives at a moment when Sean Ono Lennon has been speaking publicly about carrying forward his parents’ body of work. In a December 2025 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, he said he has “technically” taken over as custodian of John Lennon’s legacy from his mother. “The world is also the custodian of his legacy,” Sean said, adding that he is “doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn’t forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko.” He went further, saying, “My parents gave me so much that I think it’s the least I can do to try and support their legacy in my lifetime. I feel like I just owe it to them. It’s a personal thing.”

Yoko Ono, now 93, has stepped back from public life in recent years and lives quietly on her farm in upstate New York. She already had two grandchildren through her older daughter, Kyoko, before Aurelius’s birth made him the first grandchild she shares with John Lennon.

John Lennon will never meet his grandson. He was shot and killed outside his New York City apartment building on December 8, 1980. His final album with Yoko Ono, Double Fantasy, released that same year, included the song “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy),” written for a young Sean, the same phrase Julian Lennon used decades later to welcome his nephew into the world.
