The Beatles Producer Phil McDonald Dies at Age 80
Phil McDonald, the Grammy-winning recording engineer and producer best known for his work with The Beatles, has died at age 80. Abbey Road Studios confirmed his death in a statement posted on the studio’s official website.
The statement opened by calling him “the wonderful Phil McDonald” and said the staff were saddened by the news. It went on to describe him as “a highly skilled, deeply trusted, and much-loved engineer who started working here in 1964 at the age of 18.”
Phil McDonald’s Career at Abbey Road Studios
McDonald’s time at Abbey Road began in the studio’s tape library, after which he moved through the cutting rooms before advancing to tape operator and eventually balance engineer. He is counted among the small group of producers whose names appear on the back cover of The Beatles’ album Abbey Road.
His earliest known session with the band took place on June 17, 1965, when he worked on the recording of “Yesterday.” From there he contributed to Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and The White Album, learning the craft under engineers Geoff Emerick and Ken Scott before stepping into a lead role for the Abbey Road sessions.
McDonald and Emerick shared the 1970 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical, for their work on Abbey Road.
Life After The Beatles
Around 1971, McDonald left Abbey Road for Apple Records, where he spent the next several years, through 1974, working individually with each of the four former Beatles on their early solo material. His later credits include sessions with Eric Clapton, Harry Nilsson, Deep Purple, Squeeze and Roy Orbison.
Abbey Road Studios noted that McDonald returned for a visit to his former workplace last year, a visit the studio called “a moment we all treasured, now even more.” The statement also remembered him for his “fantastic sense of humour, a quiet calm and a clear passion for recording and music.”
Phil McDonald is survived by his wife, Sandra.
