Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Announce ‘Origins 1971-1978’ Box Set for 50th Anniversary

Tom Petty’s estate has announced Origins 1971-1978, a new box set revisiting the formative years of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, arriving November 6, 2026 through UMe. The release lands as the band celebrates its 50th anniversary and coincides with the surviving Heartbreakers being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Awards.

• Origins 1971-1978 comes in three formats: a 5LP box set, a 4CD box set and an uber deluxe edition, each paired with a Blu-ray and DVD.
• The standalone rarities album No Sleep Til L.A. will also be sold separately on LP, CD and a limited-edition Zoetrope vinyl pressing due November 20, 2026.
• Seven of the twelve songs on No Sleep Til L.A. have never been released before.
• The band’s first two studio albums have been remixed and remastered from the original multi-track tapes by longtime engineer Ryan Ulyate.

What’s Included in the Origins 1971-1978 Box Set

At the center of the collection sits No Sleep Til L.A., a 12-song compilation that traces Tom Petty’s musical path from the earliest Mudcrutch sessions through the eventual formation of the Heartbreakers. The material spans recording sessions in Miami, Tulsa and Los Angeles as Petty searched for the right lineup and sound.

The box also delivers freshly remixed and remastered 50th-anniversary editions of the band’s self-titled 1976 debut, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and its 1978 follow-up, You’re Gonna Get It! Both albums feature extended versions of eleven songs apiece. Two of the outlets covering the announcement list “American Girl” and “Breakdown” among those extended cuts, while another names “American Girl” and “Refugee.”

Live From the Record Plant 1977 captures, in full for the first time, the band’s KSAN-FM radio broadcast from the Record Plant studio in Sausalito, California, which included a guest turn from Al Kooper. A companion disc, The Cut Out Bin, gathers five tracks of Petty recording away from the Heartbreakers with session players, among them a song with Leon Russell that a press release for the set calls a “yacht rock” number.

The box closes with the Heartbreakers’ 1978 performance on the BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test, restored in high definition for the first time. The disc holds nine performances running 41 minutes total, with the Blu-ray offering stereo, Atmos and 5.1 immersive mixes and the DVD presenting the full televised set. Former Old Grey Whistle Test host Bob Harris, writing in the Blu-ray booklet, called the appearance “one of the greatest performances we had ever seen by a band at the top of their game,” adding that the Heartbreakers “played music from another planet to a room packed with manic fans.”

Vinyl editions of the box set come with an 88-page fanzine that includes liner notes from David Fricke and Bud Scoppa, song-by-song commentary from the band’s original members, full credits for the first two albums, and a stash of archival photos, Polaroids, postcards and other collectibles.

Tom Petty’s ‘Parade of Loons’ Video

To introduce the box set, Petty’s estate released “Parade of Loons,” a previously unheard track recorded in 1978. The song arrives with an animated video directed by Peter Sluszka and featuring Young Sheldon actor Iain Armitage.

Heartbreakers Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Awards

The Origins announcement lands on the same night the surviving members of the Heartbreakers are set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Awards. Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair are scheduled to reunite for a performance alongside Chris Stapleton, with Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston joining for a closing song.
