Tom Scholz Shares Rare Live Recording of Boston’s ‘More Than a Feeling’

Boston guitarist Tom Scholz posted a rare live recording of “More Than a Feeling” on Facebook on August 27, 2026. The footage was captured during the band’s 2017 Hyper Space tour and, according to Scholz, represents one of the last available live recordings of the song in existence.

Scholz explained that the audio was not cleaned up or reconstructed in a studio. Instead, it is the raw stereo signal that ran from the mixing console to the venue’s speakers during the show, meaning it carries the imperfections and stray sounds typical of a live mix in a big room. Band member Gary Pihl paired the audio with actual video footage from the concert for the release.

The Post Marks 50 Years Since Boston’s Debut Album

Scholz’s Facebook update lands as Boston marks the 50th anniversary of its self-titled debut album, which came out on August 25, 1976. Earlier in the same week, the band announced an expanded edition of that debut, which will include previously unreleased “lost demos.” The reissue is planned for release in the second quarter of 2027.

In his Facebook post, Scholz looked back on the period before Boston’s breakthrough, describing 1975 as the year he finished what he intended to be his final demo. Working with singer Brad Delp and drummer Jim Masdea, he had recorded and arranged the songs exactly the way he wanted them to sound, but he wasn’t expecting anything to come of it.

“My demos had been universally rejected for years, now I was just making one last recording of my best songs before I threw in the towel at age 29,” Scholz said.

Scholz said he braced for another round of rejections, including from Epic Records, and figured his musical instincts simply didn’t match what the industry wanted at the time. Instead, after hearing “More Than a Feeling,” Epic offered him and Delp a contract. “Thank you Tom Werman at Epic for having ears!” Scholz said, crediting the label executive who championed the song.

Scholz Explains Why the Anniversary Post Came a Day Late

Scholz also addressed a one-day delay in sharing his 50th-anniversary tribute to “More Than a Feeling.” He said he was on the verge of publishing the post on Tuesday, August 25, when he learned of Dolly Parton’s death that same day. Out of respect, he chose to hold off before posting his note about the song’s anniversary.
