Rock Legends

Rock Legends #1306: Guitar Legends | The blues, was the forerunner of rock and roll, essentially it was one man and his guitar. And that’s where the love affair of rock and roll and guitar began. But the real key to the success of the guitarist in rock and roll, was amplification. Once the guitar could be properly amplified, then it took over. And from the very early days, it was the sound of rock and roll.

Rock Legends #1307: Canadian Rockers | There is something about Canadian rock music that has its own character. Here you have this enormous country with only 20 million people, bordering America, the home of rock and roll, and yet if you listen to Neil Young, The Band, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, all the way up to the Arcade Fire, there is something about it, which is different. It’s got its own sort of energy, which is distinct from the USA.

Rock Legends

Rock Legends #1308: Drummer Legends | A great drummer has to have impeccable timing, rhythm, co-ordination. Of course, they need to know the techniques of drum fills, but also, a truly great drummer needs to have passion and have something unique about them that makes them stand out, something in them before they even approach the instrument. Through practice anyone can learn technically to play the drums, but if you’ve got that innate connection to the rhythm, the drive, the passion, that’s when that kind of talent really shines through.

Rock Legends

Rock Legends #1309: Doo-Wop Extra | Doo-wop is a genre of acapella rhythm and blues music, which originated in the 1930s and ’40s in African American communities in big US cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, and it’s a capella because the focus is on vocal harmonies and this beautiful layering between a lead vocal and these strong voices underneath, which mimic instruments. There’s the sound of bass or reed or string instruments, and also this idea that the doo-wop sound comes from mimicking drums.

Rock Legends

Rock Legends #1311: Mod | Mod, from the word modernist, is a subculture that began in late 1950s London and spread throughout Great Britain, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries. It continues today on a smaller scale. Focused on music and fashion, the subculture has its roots in a small group of stylish London-based young men and women in the late 1950s who were termed modernists because they listened to modern jazz. Elements of the mod subculture include fashion (often tailor-made suits); music (including soul, rhythm and blues, ska and mainly jazz) and motor scooters (usually Lambretta or Vespa). In the mid-1960s when they started to fade out, the subculture listened to rock groups with jazz and blues influences such as the Who and Small Faces.

Rock Legends

Rock Legends #1312: Punk Rock | Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in 1950s rock and roll and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the corporate nature of mainstream 1970s rock music. They typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles with stripped-down instrumentation. Lyricism in punk typically revolves around anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian themes. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produce recordings and distribute them through independent labels.

Rock Legends #1313: 90s Riot Grrrl | Riot grrrl is an underground feminist punk movement that began during the early 1990s within the United States in Olympia, Washington, and the greater Pacific Northwest, and has expanded to at least 26 other countries. A subcultural movement that combines feminism, punk music, and politics, it is often associated with third-wave feminism, which is sometimes seen as having grown out of the riot grrrl movement and has recently been seen in fourth-wave feminist punk music that rose in the 2010s.[ The genre has also been described as coming out of indie rock, with the punk scene serving as an inspiration for a movement in which women could express anger, rage, and frustration, emotions considered socially acceptable for male songwriters but less commonly for women.
