Adekunle Gold, an award-winning Nigerian highlife singer, songwriter, and graphic designer, has established himself as a household name in his native country. Gold’s music, which he describes as “urban highlife,” seamlessly blends elements of contemporary pop, electronica, folk, and R&B, creating a unique and engaging sound. His musical journey began with the release of his debut solo single, “Sade,” in 2014, a captivating cover of One Direction’s “Story of My Life,” which quickly gained popularity on the airwaves of Lagos. The song, mixed by the talented Nigerian singer and songwriter Simi, earned Gold an award at Nigeria’s prestigious Headies awards for Best Alternative Song. Subsequently, he signed with Olamide’s YBNL Nation label, for which he also designed the logo, and went on to release chart-topping singles like “Orente” and “Pick Up.” In 2017, Gold unveiled his debut album, ‘Gold,’ which reached the seventh spot on the World Albums Chart, followed by his successful sophomore album, ‘About 30,’ in 2018.
Born Omoba Adekunle Kosoko into the royal family of Lagos State, Nigeria, Adekunle Gold carries the title of prince and is the nephew of the renowned ‘Nollywood’ actor, Prince Jide Kosoko. Growing up in a family that valued religious freedom, Gold, the only male among his siblings, embarked on his musical journey as a member of a local church choir. His passion for music led him to write his first song at the young age of 15 and later join a boy band called the Bridge, before ultimately pursuing a solo career in music. Inspired by a pastor’s sermon, Gold adopted his stage name and honed his skills in arts and design at Lagos State Polytechnic, specializing in graphic arts, painting, and sculpture. Throughout his career, Gold has collaborated with notable artists, including Simi, Olamide, and other industry talents, earning accolades such as Alternative Song of the Year at the Headies awards and Revelation of the Year at the AFRIMA awards. His musical prowess and creative vision have propelled him to international acclaim, with successful album releases and chart-topping singles that resonate with audiences worldwide.
