Naughty By Nature

Naughty by Nature, a renowned hip-hop group with a unique blend of catchy anthems and hardcore rap credibility, originated in East Orange, NJ, in 1986. Consisting of MCs Treach, Vinnie, and DJ Kay Gee, the trio caught the attention of Queen Latifah, who played a crucial role in their early success by signing them to her management company and helping secure a deal with Tommy Boy Records. Their self-titled debut album in 1991 saw the breakout hit “O.P.P.”, propelling Naughty by Nature to stardom in both mainstream pop charts and the underground hip-hop scene. Treach’s versatile talent extended to acting, with notable appearances in films like Juice and The Meteor Man, alongside their musical journey.
Building on their initial triumph, Naughty by Nature achieved further commercial success with their follow-up album, ’19 Naughty III,’ featuring the iconic anthem “Hip Hop Hooray.” Despite a hiatus after the 1995 album ‘Poverty’s Paradise,’ which earned them a Grammy, individual pursuits like Treach’s acting in HBO’s Oz and Kay Gee’s extensive production work kept them in the spotlight. The group faced challenges, including legal issues and lineup changes, yet continued to release new music. From their comeback album ’19 Naughty Nine: Nature’s Fury’ to the return as a duo with ‘IIcons,’ Naughty by Nature’s resilience and lasting impact on hip-hop culture remain undeniable. Rumors of a potential comeback album, ‘Anthem Inc.,’ in 2011 hinted at even more legendary moments from this iconic group.
