Vincent Jamal Staples, born on July 2, 1993, is a prominent American rapper hailing from Compton, California. Staples gained recognition through his early collaborations with alternative hip hop collective Odd Future, particularly with Mike G and Earl Sweatshirt. He kickstarted his career by signing with Talib Kweli’s Blacksmith Records and later joined No I.D.’s ARTium Recordings, a subsidiary of Def Jam Recordings. His musical journey took off with the release of his debut extended play, ‘Hell Can Wait’ in 2014, which landed on the Billboard 200 chart. Staples’ breakthrough moment came with the critical success of his debut album ‘Summertime ’06’ in 2015, featuring the platinum-certified track ‘Norf Norf’. He continued to evolve artistically with subsequent albums like ‘Big Fish Theory’ (2017), ‘FM!’ (2019), ‘Vincent Jamal Staples’ (2021), and ‘Ramona Park Broke My Heart’ (2022), receiving praise for his unique fusion of West Coast hip hop and experimental production styles.
Apart from his solo endeavors, Staples is also a part of the California-based hip hop trio Cutthroat Boyz alongside Aston Matthews and Joey Fatts. Beyond music, he has showcased his acting skills in films like ‘Dope’ and ‘White Men Can’t Jump’, as well as the TV series ‘Abbott Elementary’. Not limited to the screen, Staples has lent his voice to projects such as the 2015 film ‘Mutafukaz’, animated series like ‘American Dad!’, and ‘Lazor Wulf’. In addition, he assumed the role of a spokesperson and brand ambassador for Sprite in 2015, showcasing his versatility and multi-dimensional talent across various entertainment platforms.
