The Grateful Dead is celebrating its 60th anniversary in grand fashion with the release of a massive box set titled “Enjoying the Ride.” This 60-disc collection, set to be released on May 30, 2025, commemorates the band's legacy with a vast array of live performances derived from concerts held between 1969 and 1994. Impressively, the box set will include unreleased performances spanning these years, making it a treasure trove for Deadheads and music enthusiasts. The set features 450 tracks and totals over 60 hours of music documented from 20 iconic venues across America, virtually all of which are being made public for the first time.

David Lemieux, the Grateful Dead's archivist and legacy manager, curated “Enjoying the Ride” and described the venture as akin to a modern-day circus. For fans, following the Grateful Dead across cities was about the communal experience, reminiscent of running away and joining a circus. The selected venues encapsulate that periodic nomadic essence where fans gathered to bask in live performances. Among the box set, notable shows include those at historic spots like the Fillmore West, Madison Square Garden, and the Frost Amphitheater, with all of these performances capturing the spontaneity that made Grateful Dead concerts legendary.

The expansive collection offers more than just music, encapsulating the Dead's rich history with a keepsake packaging designed to echo the feeling of traveling across the country to witness the band live. To enhance the connection with the fans, the box set includes a detailed tour guide with liner notes penned by Jesse Jarnow, co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast podcast. The collection is also illustrated with a plethora of photographs, enriching the narrative of the band's extensive touring life. The set brings to life the band's legacy in a tangible form that fans can cherish, acting as both a homage and a documentation of the Grateful Dead's unparalleled live presence.

Complementing the massive collection is an abridged version titled “The Music Never Stopped.” Available in three compact discs or six LPs, this version offers a sampling of performances with at least one track from each of the 20 venues featured in the deluxe box set. It serves as an accessible entry point for fans who may not wish to delve into the full 60-disc commitment but still desire a taste of the legendary concerts. “The Music Never Stopped” will be available both as physical media and in digital formats, catering to varying preferences in how music is enjoyed today.

In conjunction with the release announcement, three songs from a live performance at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on July 13, 1984, including “Scarlet Begonias,” “Touch of Grey,” and “Fire on the Mountain,” are now available for streaming. These tracks offer a preview of the vibrant sounds captured in the box set and reinforce the Grateful Dead's reputation for delivering performances full of energy and improvisation.

For enthusiasts willing to invest in this piece of musical history, “Enjoying the Ride” is priced at $599.98, with 6,000 limited, numbered copies available. Digital formats of the set are being offered as well, allowing fans to experience high-quality audio recordings in either ALAC or FLAC forms. Mark Pinkus, president of Rhino Records, underscores the personal significance of including a show from the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, his inaugural Grateful Dead concert. This inclusion encapsulates the broader significance this set holds for fans — serving as both a personal relic and a collective memory of the band's enduring influence and the spirit of the Grateful Dead community.
