The Doobie Brothers are poised to make a significant return to the music scene in 2025 with their upcoming album, “Walk This Road.” This new release marks an important milestone for the band, largely because it will be their first album featuring Michael McDonald's vocals since 1980. The return of McDonald, known for his soulful voice and significant influence on the band's sound during their peak years, is a highlight that has garnered much attention. His involvement in this new project signals a reunion with the familiar vocal and instrumental collaborations that fans have cherished over the decades.

The album, “Walk This Road,” is set to include 10 new tracks featuring the collaborative efforts of band members Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, and Michael McDonald. Once more, John McFee will add his musical prowess, ensuring a blend of new and familiar sounds. Production is handled by John Shanks, who also co-wrote and played on the tracks, continuing his work with the band following their 2021 release, “Liberté.”  The involvement of special guests, such as beloved soul singer Mavis Staples, promises to add another layer of depth and variety to the album.

Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, and Michael McDonald have been long-standing pillars of The Doobie Brothers, each contributing distinct talents that combine to create the band’s signature sound. Their varied songwriting and vocal styles have historically driven the band's versatility and success. The announcement of a new album with McDonald’s involvement highlights a return to the creative synergy that defined their earlier works, such as during the creation of their classic hits in the '70s and early '80s.

The new album is particularly significant in light of the band's history. Since their last full album with McDonald, “One Step Closer,” in 1980, the band has undergone numerous transformations and lineup changes. Although McDonald rejoined for special projects, including the band's 2014 album “Southbound” and their 50th anniversary tour, “Walk This Road” marks his first full-fledged collaborative album with the band in four decades.

Pat Simmons shared in a Facebook post that “Walk This Road” is a project they are proud of, signifying the culmination of shared experiences and renewed camaraderie among the band members. This album also aligns with the band's ongoing endeavor to remain an active and influential presence in the music world. Known for their harmony-laden hits and genre-spanning sound, The Doobie Brothers continue to captivate audiences, a testament to their legacy in the music industry.
