Spoon

Spoon’s tenth album, Lucifer on the Sofa, is the band’s purest rock ’n roll record to date. Texas-made, it is the first set of songs that the quintet has put to tape in its hometown of Austin in more than a decade.
Lucifer on the Sofa bottles the physical thrill of a band tearing up a packed room. It’s an album of intensity and intimacy, where the music’s harshest edges feel as vivid as the directions quietly murmured into the mic on the first take. According to frontman Britt Daniel, “It’s the sound of classic rock as written by a guy who never did get Eric Clapton.”

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Formed in 2007 by Ima Robot frontman Alex Ebert after a brief period of existential crisis, the cultish ten-piece indie rock outfit Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros draw their inspiration from the communal musical communities that peppered Southern California (specifically Laurel Canyon) with positive vibrations during the ’60s and early ’70s. Employing a unique sound that brought to mind a not-so-subtle mix of Parliament, Polyphonic Spree, Bob Marley, and the Incredible String Band, the then 11-piece group released its debut EP, Here Comes, in May 2009, followed by the full-length Up from Below in July. The band grew in renown based in part on its fiery live show, touring often and making several television appearances, including multiple performances on Late Night with David Letterman.
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros followed up their debut in 2012 with the full-length Here, one of two albums the band had planned for release that year. It climbed to number five on the Billboard 200, also charting in France and Australia. It would be 2013 before a third, self-titled album materialized. It hit the U.S. Top 15, and in 2014, among many solo projects within the band, Ebert won a Golden Globe for his score for the 2013 Robert Redford film All Is Lost. With a more focused approach that gathered the whole band, by then a ten-piece, into a single room to write and record as a group, the PersonA LP was released in the spring of 2016. It featured cover art that redacted ‘Edward Sharpe and’ with red lines to emphasize the unity.

Mitski

Sometimes Mitski feels life would be easier without hope or a soul or love. But when she closes her eyes and thinks about what’s truly hers, what can’t be repossessed or demolished, she sees love. “The best thing I ever did in my life was to love people,” she says. “I wish I could leave behind all the love I have after I die, so I can shine all this goodness, all this love that I’ve created onto other people.” She hopes her newest album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, will shine love long after she’s gone. That’s precisely how it feels: like a love that’s haunting the land.
“This is my most American album,” she says. The music feels like a profound act of witnessing this country, in all its private sorrows and contradictions. Sonically Mitski’s most epic and wise album, it introduces wounds and then actively heals them. Here, love is time-traveling to bless our tender days, like light from a distant star. It’s full of the ache of the grown-up, seemingly mundane heartbreaks and joys that are often unsung but feel enormous. It’s a tiny epic. From the bottom of a glass, to a driveway slushy with memory and snow, to a freight train barreling through the Midwest, all the way to the moon, it feels like everything and everyone is crying out in pain, arching towards love. Love is that inhospitable land, beckoning and then rejecting us. To love this place, this earth, this America, this body takes work. It might be impossible. The best things are. Reel Big Fish

Reel Big Fish, based in Huntington Beach, California, emerged as one of the prominent Southern California ska-punk bands in the mid-’90s, gaining mainstream recognition following the success of No Doubt and Sublime. Known for their hyperkinetic stage shows, quirky humor, and ska-infused sound, the band made a breakthrough with the single ‘Sell Out’ from their second album ‘Turn the Radio Off’ in 1997. Despite the decline of ska-punk’s popularity, Reel Big Fish redefined their lineup and continued releasing new music, including the 2018 album ‘Life Sucks…Let’s Dance!’. Initially a trio consisting of Aaron Barrett, Matt Wong, and Andrew Gonzales, the band evolved into a ska powerhouse with the addition of horn players like Tavis Werts, Scott Klopfenstein, Grant Barry, and Dan Regan after discovering ska music. Their self-released debut album ‘Everything Sucks’ in 1995 garnered underground success, leading to a deal with Mojo Records. Over the years, Reel Big Fish toured extensively, collaborated with various artists, and navigated label changes, ultimately asserting their independence in the music industry.

Sneaker Pimps

Formed in Hartlepool, UK, Sneaker Pimps immediately emerged as a musical force and pioneer of the trip-hop genre with their debut album ‘Becoming X’ (1996). Known for clever sampling, bittersweet melodies and a moody sound which intricately combined organic/electronic production and morphed between female and male vocal performances, they landed in the UK Top 40 five times during their initial seven-year run with tracks such as ‘Six Underground’, ‘Spin Spin Sugar’, ‘Low Five’ and ‘Bloodsport’.
After a mutual decision to explore other avenues, both founding members Chris Corner (IAMX) and Liam Howe (AMP) went on to create their own highly successful musical and visual projects collaborating with artists as diverse as Gary Numan and Lana del Rey. Now based in LA and London respectively, Sneaker Pimps have reunited and, alongside newly-added vocalist Simonne Jones, are set to release their long-anticipated fourth album, ‘Squaring The Circle’. The double album is out now.

Veruca Salt

Veruca Salt reshaped the jagged, abrasive punk-pop of the Pixies and Breeders into a more accessible, riff-driven power pop formula that also borrowed from pop/hard rockers like Cheap Trick. It was a successful formula, both musically and commercially, yet it didn’t ensure them indie rock credibility; in fact, they became one of the most harshly criticized bands of the post-Nirvana alternative rock era, despite being one of the first female-fronted outfits to achieve stardom in that genre. Veruca Salt took shape in early 1992, when Chicago residents Louise Post and Nina Gordon began touring the local folk circuit. Both were competent singers and guitarists, and a year’s worth of coffeehouse performances fueled their desire to recruit additional members for a full-fledged band. After adding bassist Steve Lack and drummer Jim Shapiro (Gordon’s brother), Veruca Salt released their debut single, ‘Seether’/ ‘All Hail Me,’ in 1994 on the local independent label Minty Fresh Records. Produced by Brad Wood (Liz Phair), the record became a word-of-mouth sensation, working its way to alternative and college radio stations. While supporting Hole on their fall tour, Veruca Salt released the debut album American Thighs on the Minty Fresh label, yet they soon cut a major-label deal with Geffen, which then re-released the album. ‘Seether’ became an MTV hit as well, and soon the single was an across-the-board success. However, the group received scathing criticism from magazines and fanzines, claiming that Veruca Salt were nothing but ripoff artists who used Minty Fresh as a way to gain credibility. Nevertheless, the group’s popularity didn’t suffer, and American Thighs went gold, even though their next two singles — ‘Number One Blind’ and ‘All Hail Me’ — didn’t attract half the attention that ‘Seether’ commanded.
After releasing the stopgap, Steve Albini-produced EP Blow It Out Your Ass It’s Veruca Salt in 1996, the band returned in early 1997 with Eight Arms to Hold You, which moved toward hard rock and heavy metal. Although critical reaction was even more mixed, the album still reached gold sales status, propelled in part by the Top Ten rock single ‘Volcano Girls.’ Shortly after the album was completed, Shapiro left the lineup and was replaced by former Letters to Cleo drummer Stacy Jones. Meanwhile, in the wake of rumors that Gordon and Post had been feuding and/or considering solo projects, it was confirmed that Gordon had quit the band in early 1998 to pursue a separate solo career. Undeterred, Post regrouped Veruca Salt as her own project. Now boasting a revised lineup including guitarist Stephen Fitzpatrick, bassist Suzanne Sokol, and drummer Jimmy Madla, the band left Geffen Records (which had been swallowed by a corporate merger) and inked a new record deal with Beyond. They also entered the studio to record Resolver, a fiery album that dealt with Gordon’s departure and Post’s failed relationship with Dave Grohl. Released during the spring of 2000, Resolver didn’t enjoy the same success as Veruca Salt’s previous albums, although the band continued to tour as Post wrote new material. The Officially Dead EP was released in 2003 and charted well in Australia, where the band began to focus some of its touring efforts. With an ever-changing lineup (now featuring Post, Fitzpatrick, drummer Kelli Scott, and bassist Nicole Fiorentino), Veruca Salt then recorded another five-song EP, 2005’s Lords of Sounds and Lesser Things. An additional full-length album, IV, was issued the following year. Following a lackluster public response to the album, the band went on a lengthy hiatus. As unexpectedly as they’d parted ways, Gordon and Post announced in 2013 that they had ‘buried the hatchet’ and were reuniting the band’s original lineup. They jokingly referred to the era following Gordon’s departure as ‘Veruca Starship’ and readied new material, the first taste of which was 2014’s Record Store Day EP MMXIV. The full-length Ghost Notes followed in July 2015. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Goldfinger

Los Angeles quartet Goldfinger helped contribute to a U.S. ska-punk movement in the mid- to late ’90s along with Rancid, No Doubt, Sublime, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The group was originally formed in 1994 by guitarist/singer John Feldmann and bassist/singer Simon Williams (who were both working at the same shoe store at the time), in addition to drummer Darrin Pfeiffer. A friend of Feldmann’s, Charlie Paulson, signed on shortly thereafter, playing his first show with the group just a day after being given a tape of their songs to learn. The band’s fate turned when their song, Here In Your Bedroom, was added into rotation on KROQ in Los Angeles, and everything changed. Soon they were touring the world, opening up for their heroes and then by the mid 2000s, becoming legends in their own right. Goldfinger has released 7 full length albums, sold millions of records worldwide, and been instrumental in helping to launch the careers of many of rocks top acts. They still continue to release music and play shows around the world to this day. Most recent release: 2017’s “The Knife” via Rise Records.
