Black Pumas

When Black Pumas made their self-titled debut in 2019, the Austin duo set off a reaction almost as combustible and rapturous as their music itself. Along with earning a career total of seven Grammy Award nominations, singer/songwriter Eric Burton and guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada achieved massive success as a live act and delivering a transcendent show Burton aptly refers to as ‘electric church.’ As they set to work on their highly awaited sophomore album, the band broadened their palette to include a dazzling expanse of musical forms: heavenly hybrids of soul and symphonic pop, mind-bending excursions into jazz-funk and psychedelia, starry-eyed love songs that feel dropped down from the cosmos.
In creating the follow-up Chronicles of a Diamond, Black Pumas made a point of tuning out any sense of anticipation from the outside world. ‘I knew the first record was good when we finished it, but I had no idea people would respond like they did,’ says Quesada. ‘This time around there was a lot of pressure and expectation that we hadn’t felt before, which was overwhelming at times, but we did our best to tune that out and focus on trusting ourselves like we always have.’ As a result, Chronicles of a Diamond wholly echoes an essential intention behind its creation. ‘More than anything I wanted to make something we’d be thrilled to play live 200 days a year,’ says Burton. ‘I wanted to be able to laugh, cry, bob my head, do the thing: it was all very much a selfish endeavor.’

The Used

Emerging as a voice for the damaged masses in the early-2000s post-hardcore scene, rock group the Used gained popularity with their breakthrough platinum debut album, ‘The Used.’ The potent mixture of feral rage and unabashed vulnerability connected them to their audience, with hit singles like ‘The Taste of Ink’ and ‘Buried Myself Alive’ resonating on radio and MTV. Despite challenges, the band reached creative peaks on albums like ‘In Love and Death’ and ‘Lies for the Liars.’ Their sound evolved with each release, showcasing maturity and growth in their seventh effort, ‘The Canyon,’ and the nostalgic callback to their roots in 2020’s ‘Heartwork’.
The Used’s journey was marked by overcoming poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse in their hometown of Orem, Utah, before securing a contract with Reprise Records and releasing their self-titled debut album in 2002. Relentless touring quickly expanded their fan base, leading to successful stints on major tours like Warped Tour and Ozzfest. Their public consciousness soared with the release of ‘In Love and Death’ in 2004, followed by collaborations and successful albums like ‘Artwork’ and ‘Imaginary Enemy.’ Despite lineup changes, including the departure of members and new recruits like Justin Shekoski, the band continued to evolve, culminating in critically acclaimed releases like ‘The Canyon’ and ‘Heartwork’ in 2017 and 2020 respectively.

The Verve Pipe

Primarily known for their post-grunge blockbuster hit “The Freshmen,” the Verve Pipe formed in 1992 in Lansing, Michigan, where frontman Brian Vander Ark pieced his group together from the ashes of two local bands. He and his brother, bassist Brad Vander Ark, had previously played in Johnny with an Eye, while drummer Donny Brown and guitarist Brian Stout were veterans of Water 4 the Pool. Both bands had been local favorites throughout Michigan, which helped the newly formed Verve Pipe become a local hit on college campuses across the state. They released their first independent album, I’ve Suffered a Head Injury, in the fall of 1992. Stout was dropped from the lineup in 1993 and was replaced by A.J. Dunning. The same year, the band released a second independent album, Pop Smear. Through constant touring, they developed a strong reputation and rabid following in their home state, packing large venues with converted fans and eventually selling a combined total of more than 40,000 copies of their first two albums.
In 1995, the Verve Pipe signed to RCA Records and began recording their major-label debut, Villains, which appeared the following year. The album spent 15 weeks in Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, and its lead single, “Photograph,” enjoyed respectable airplay on alternative radio and MTV. Keyboardist Doug Corella was added as a full-time member the same year. After spending 12 months touring and promoting Villains, including an opening spot for Kiss on the European leg of their much-hyped reunion tour, the Verve Pipe finally began to make some serious headway in early 1997, when a re-recorded version of “The Freshmen” — originally found on the group’s debut, I’ve Suffered a Head Injury — was released as a single. By that spring, “The Freshmen” had become a number one modern rock hit and a Top Ten pop smash, sending the album into the Top 40 and earning a gold certification. Villains eventually went platinum, and “The Freshmen” became the band’s signature song. The Verve Pipe released a self-titled sophomore album in mid-1999, but its grungy songs sounded sorely out of place in a market now saturated by nu-metal groups like Limp Bizkit, and the record failed to produce any hit singles. The band returned in 2001 with Underneath, a considerably stronger album with production by Adam Schlesinger. It, too, failed to spawn any hits as big as “The Freshmen,” and the group took an eight-year break from the recording studio while Brian Vander Ark turned his attention to a solo career. Reconvening in 2009, the Verve Pipe issued a collection of family-friendly songs — the aptly titled A Family Album — and toured in support of its release. Four years later, the Verve Pipe released their second children’s album, Are We There Yet? The band returned to adult-oriented rock music in 2014 with Overboard. In the years that followed, they toured regularly, building up to the 20th anniversary of 1996’s Villains which they celebrated by acoustically playing the album in its entirety at Ann Arbor’s The Ark. This performance was released as a live album in 2017, accompanied by Parachute, another collection of original material. ~ Chris Woodstra & Andrew Leahey, Rovi

White Town

White Town consists of Jyoti Mishra, who writes and records the music almost entirely on his own, with occasional help from other musicians. Best known for the 1997 hit “Your Woman,” White Town’s mix of musical, political, and social influences makes Mishra one of the more intriguing, although frustratingly inconsistent, musicians in ’90s indie pop. Mishra was born in Rourkela, India, on July 30, 1966; his family emigrated to England when he was three years old. The name White Town was inspired by his experiences growing up as an Indian in a small English village. Mishra began playing the piano at age 12, and by his mid-teens, he was playing keyboards in a local band.
Inspired by the Wedding Present and the general resurgence of guitar-based pop music in the mid-’80s, Mishra taught himself guitar and formed the first edition of White Town in early 1989. Originally, it was a four-person indie band in the classic post-C86 style, and played gigs supporting bands like the Sea Urchins and the pre-dance Primal Scream. The group released their first EP, White Town (featuring an eponymous song), on Mishra’s own Satya Records in 1990. The 7″ EP and a flexidisc that came out about the same time attracted the attention of Parasol Records, a northern-Illinois-based indie that was just starting out. A White Town single, “All She Said,” was the label’s fourth release. Two more EPs followed in 1992, Fairweather Friend and Bewitched, before Mishra finally released White Town’s first full-length album in 1994; the title Socialism, Sexism and Sexuality neatly encapsulated the sometimes strident lyrical concerns of the songs therein.
After the release of the album, Mishra grew tired of the limitations of the indie-guitar format and started working again with synthesizers and samplers. Two years’ worth of experiments linking samples and guitars were released, in 1996, as the EP Abort, Retry, Fail? One of that EP’s songs was “Your Woman,” a song inspired in part by Mishra’s teenage infatuation with a lesbian friend, based around a nagging trumpet sample from Lew Stone’s 1932 jazz hit “My Woman.” This song got EMI interested to sign White Town to their Chrysalis label, which released the full-length Women in Technology in 1997. Though the re-released “Your Woman” was a hit in both the U.S. and the U.K., interest in follow-up singles was nil, and Mishra happily went back to Parasol, where he released the Another Lover EP in 1998. The third White Town album, Peek and Poke, received mixed reviews upon its 2000 release.

IDLES

TANGK is the righteous and vibrant fifth album from madcap truth-seekers, IDLES. Pronounced “tank” with a whiff of the “g” – an onomatopoeic reference to the lashing way the band imagined their guitars sounding that has since grown into a sigil for living in love – the record is the band’s most ambitious and striking work yet. Where IDLES were once set on taking the world’s piss, squaring off with strong jaws against the perennially entitled, and exercising personal trauma in real-time, they have arrived in this new act to offer the fruits of such perseverance: love, joy, and indeed gratitude for the mere opportunity of existence.
