Alex Van Halen, the drummer and co founder of the rock band Van Halen, says he is working with Toto guitarist Steve Lukather on a new album project.

Van Halen confirmed the collaboration in a recent interview, saying he is preparing to make a record with Lukather and additional collaborators. He described the effort as being in the early stages and offered few specifics about its final form.

The project is expected to involve previously unreleased recordings connected to Van Halen’s late guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who died in 2020. Van Halen has said the material comes from archived recordings and ideas left behind by his brother, though he has not detailed how extensively the recordings will be used.

Lukather and Eddie Van Halen shared a long personal and professional friendship that extended back decades. Lukather has spoken publicly about their close relationship and their work together on various studio projects, including Michael Jackson’s 1983 hit “Beat It.”

Lukather has indicated that his role in the new project will not involve replacing Eddie Van Halen’s guitar work. Instead, he has described his involvement as supportive and collaborative, focused on helping shape the music while preserving Eddie Van Halen’s original performances.

No release date has been announced, and Van Halen said the project remains a work in progress. Further details are expected to be released as the collaboration develops.
