MVD Entertainment Group will release the Billy Idol documentary ‘Should Be Dead’ on Blu-ray and DVD on November 3, 2026. The film, directed by Jonas Akerlund, arrives on home video after premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in summer 2025 and playing a limited U.S. theatrical run in early 2026.

What the Billy Idol Documentary Covers
‘Should Be Dead’ follows Billy Idol’s path from fronting the punk band Generation X to becoming a solo rock star known worldwide. The documentary digs into the highs and lows of that journey, including his brushes with death and how he pulled through them.
Idol fronted Generation X on three albums released between 1977 and 1981 before launching a solo career in 1982 alongside guitarist Steve Stevens. That partnership produced staples such as “Dancing With Myself,” “White Wedding,” “Rebel Yell,” “Eyes Without A Face,” and “Cradle of Love.”

Alongside Billy Idol himself, the film features interview segments with longtime guitarist Steve Stevens, plus a lineup of famous admirers and collaborators: Miley Cyrus, Billie Joe Armstrong, Duff McKagan, Steve Jones, Pete Townshend, Nile Rodgers, Patrick Stump and Perri Lister all weigh in.
From Tribeca to Physical Media
The documentary debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in summer 2025, then went through an award-qualifying run that fall before opening in a limited number of U.S. theaters during the first quarter of 2026. Evan Saxon Productions oversaw the film’s U.S. theatrical rights during that run.
The agreement to bring ‘Should Be Dead’ to Blu-ray and DVD was struck by Bill Sondheim, President and CEO of Greenfield Media, representing Live Nation Studios and Giant Pictures, and Eric D. Wilkinson, Director of Acquisitions for MVD Entertainment Group.
Wilkinson said Akerlund’s film moves past Billy Idol’s well-known image to tell the story of the man behind it, and pointed to the timing lining up with Idol’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction this year. Idol is set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2026.
Billy Idol’s Recent Album and Chart Success
The home video release comes as Idol’s album ‘Dream Into It’ remains available through Dark Horse Records, marking his first full album of new material in more than ten years. The record reached number 7 on the U.S. Top Albums Chart, also landing at number 4 on the U.S. Current Rock Album Chart, climbing to number 9 on the U.K. Official Album Sales Chart, and peaking at number 2 on Germany’s Top 100 Album Chart.
