Eagles Greatest Hits Goes Quadruple Diamond

The Eagles have once again made music history. As of today, January 22, 2026, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has officially certified their landmark compilation, Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975, as Quadruple Diamond.

This means the album has now surpassed 40 million units in the United States, making it the first album in history to achieve this milestone and solidifying its place as the best-selling album of all time in the U.S.

A Record-Breaking Milestone

The new certification puts the Eagles even further ahead of their closest competitors. To put the 40-million mark in perspective:

  • The Lead: The Eagles now lead Michael Jackson’s Thriller (currently at 34x Platinum) by 6 million units.

  • Internal Competition: The band also holds the #3 spot on the all-time list with Hotel California, which was updated today to 28x Platinum.

  • The Scale: If you laid 40 million vinyl records side by side, they would stretch roughly 7,575 miles—the distance from Los Angeles to Cairo, Egypt.

From First Platinum to Quadruple Diamond

The Eagles have a unique history with RIAA milestones. In 1976, Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 was the first album ever to receive a Platinum certification (which at the time represented 1 million copies shipped). Fifty years later, it has evolved from the first 1x Platinum record to the first 40x Platinum record.

“In an age, in a culture, where everything seems to become more ephemeral by the day, it is gratifying to have been part of something that endures, even for fifty years,” founding member Don Henley said in a statement. “We are amazed and grateful.”

Celebrating 50 Years

The announcement comes as the band prepares to celebrate the album's 50th anniversary on February 17. To mark the occasion:

  • Special Edition Vinyl: A limited “crystal-clear” 180-gram vinyl edition will be released through the band's official website.

  • The 40M Plaque: A massive commemorative plaque, measuring nearly five feet high, will be displayed at Third Encore, the band's immersive fan experience at the Venetian in Las Vegas.

  • Sphere Residency: The band continues their record-breaking residency at the Las Vegas Sphere, with their final 12 shows beginning tomorrow and running through March.
