Evanescence, the renowned goth alternative metal band led by frontwoman Amy Lee, has entered the spotlight once again with their new single “Afterlife,” featured in Netflix's animated adaptation of the popular Capcom video game series, Devil May Cry. This track marks a significant moment for the band as “Afterlife” serves both as a testament to their enduring musical prowess and as an exciting addition to the show's anticipated soundtrack. Frontwoman Amy Lee conveys that the inspiration for “Afterlife” stemmed from the “horrific & beautiful” aesthetic of the new Netflix series. Adi Shankar, the series' executive producer, orchestrates this intersection of music and media by fusing gothic auditory elements with vibrant anime visuals, a collaboration that Lee enthusiastically embraced, despite her unfamiliarity with the Devil May Cry series prior to this project.

In crafting “Afterlife,” Evanescence collaborated with Alex Seaver, also known as Mako, who contributed not only to the songwriting but also co-produced the track alongside Nick Raskulinecz. The harmony of the song mirrors the thematic complexity of Devil May Cry, exploring motifs of pain intertwined with resolve. Amy Lee expressed her experience of integrating the emotional depth into the song, acknowledging the power of overcoming fear and embracing a committed fight when there is nothing left to lose. Her enthusiasm for the anime format and its narrative depth underscores the unique inspiration drawn from the series, adding to Evanescence’s diverse creative explorations.

This production is steeped in nostalgia and serves as a nod to the early 2000s rock scene, with its haunting yet empowering melodies. It aligns perfectly with Shankar’s directive for the series to encapsulate a PS2 era aesthetic, reflecting a time where the edginess of bands like Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach ruled the airwaves. Besides the surface appeal of “Afterlife,” Shankar describes it as resonating deeply with the show's narrative — a melancholic rock opera speaking to redemption, deeply interwoven with personal transgressions and challenges. The music video accompanying the single further builds upon this connection, offering rich visual storytelling derived from the series and immersing listeners in its layered world.

The release of “Afterlife” also aligns with Evanescence’s broader plan to release new material. Following the success of their 2021 album The Bitter Truth, the band has expressed commitment to continued creativity, exploring diverse themes that resonate deeply with their audience. As fans await the full release of the series and its accompanying soundtrack, “Afterlife” functions as both a tantalizing glimpse into the soundscapes to come and a heartfelt nod to the enduring allure of Evanescence’s music. This collaboration demonstrates not just the band's adaptability but also the enduring influence of music as a narrative instrument in multimedia spaces. With Amy Lee at the helm, Evanescence continues to traverse the sonic landscapes of nostalgia and innovation, all while engaging in bold new collaborative ventures.
