Why Foo Fighters Stepped In for the Pretty Reckless

AC/DC had been touring behind support from the Pretty Reckless, but the band was absent from the St. Louis lineup with no stated cause. The group is still slated to open AC/DC’s remaining U.S. dates, which run through September 29 in Philadelphia, and Canadian tour stops as well, suggesting St. Louis was a one-off substitution rather than a permanent lineup shift.

Dave Grohl’s Onstage Moment With AC/DC

Grohl addressed the St. Louis crowd before launching into the opening number, telling them, “Ladies and gentleman, welcome to my fucking childhood dream tonight.” He then led Foo Fighters into “All My Life” to start their nine-song set.

As the band closed its performance with “Everlong,” Grohl told fans he’d see them on the floor for AC/DC’s set, shouting, “See you on the dance floor, motherfuckers!” One item stayed off his personal wish list for the night, however: Grohl did not end up playing drums alongside AC/DC during the show.

Grohl Traces His Love of AC/DC Back to Age Eleven

In a social media post shared ahead of the show, Grohl described the pairing with AC/DC as “literally a dream come true” and signed off with a nod to the band’s catalog: “if you want blood….you’ve got it. Let there be fucking rock, St Louis. See you Sept. 8. Dave.”

Grohl has said his fascination with AC/DC dates back to seeing the band’s 1980 concert film “Let There Be Rock” at age eleven, watching it at the Uptown Theater in Washington D.C. with his friend Larry Hinkle. He has credited that viewing with showing him what raw, physical rock performance could look like and with shaping the intensity he has tried to bring to his own shows ever since.

The connection goes back further in interviews, too. Asked by Forbes in 2018 which artist represented his ultimate drumming fantasy, Grohl answered plainly: “AC/DC. That’s my last one, that’s it.”

Grohl’s history with the band also includes a more personal gesture. After breaking his leg onstage during a 2015 concert, he had a custom drum throne built so he could keep performing, and he later lent that same throne to Axl Rose when Rose, dealing with a similar injury, filled in for Brian Johnson on AC/DC’s Rock or Bust tour.
