Foo Fighters Surprise Fans with Live EP “Are Playing Where??? Vol. 1”

The Foo Fighters have dropped a surprise new live EP titled Are Playing Where??? Vol. 1, capturing the raw energy of their recent string of intimate club shows. The six-track release marks the band’s first live collection since their 2023 album But Here We Are, and it delivers a fiery, stripped-down return to their roots.

The new release features live recordings from the Foo Fighters’ unannounced pop-up shows across San Luis Obispo, Santa Ana, Washington, D.C., and New Haven during September. Each venue held only a few hundred fans, giving diehards a rare, up-close experience with one of rock’s biggest bands.

The tracklist leans heavily on the group’s earliest material, featuring:

Four of these songs come from Foo Fighters’ 1995 self-titled debut album, while “White Limo” hails from Wasting Light (2011). “Winnebago,” an obscure pre-Foos recording from Dave Grohl’s early post-Nirvana sessions, makes its first official live release appearance.

A New Era Behind the Kit

The Are Playing Where??? performances also mark the live debut of drummer Ilan Rubin, who joined the Foo Fighters in 2025 following the departure of Josh Freese. Rubin, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails and Angels & Airwaves, was introduced on stage by Dave Grohl himself during the San Luis Obispo show.

Grohl told the crowd, “The most badass motherf***er is playing drums in the Foo Fighters right now,” signaling a new era for the band. The chemistry between Grohl and Rubin was immediate, with the band ripping through deep cuts and early fan favorites at full throttle.

Charitable Release Strategy

Instead of a traditional label rollout, the Foo Fighters released the EP exclusively on Bandcamp as a pay-what-you-want digital download. All proceeds benefit local food banks in the cities where the shows were performed — a move in line with the band’s longstanding commitment to community causes.
