What Donors Get at the Metallica Blood Donation Experience
The pop-up is designed to put donors inside the feel of a Metallica show’s backstage area. As part of that setup, visitors can sit down at a replica drum kit modeled after the setup drummer Lars Ulrich uses on stage.
Every donor at the location receives a limited-edition T-shirt created by artist Squindo, while supplies last. Donors are also automatically entered into a drawing for a replica drum kit built by Tama, styled after a kit Tama made specifically for Ulrich during Metallica’s WorldWired Tour.
After donating, visitors can unwind at the Delta Backstage Lounge, a refreshment area Delta Air Lines is providing as part of its sponsorship of the pop-up.
How the Metallica and Red Cross Partnership Started
The collaboration between the band and the Red Cross traces back to April 2025, when blood drives were first held at select U.S. stops on Metallica’s “M72” tour. That effort grew into a nationwide push branded “Give Where You Live” and eventually extended to international “M72” tour stops as well.
Since the partnership began, fans have logged more than 25,000 blood donations across the United States and roughly 93,000 donations worldwide. Metallica tour accountant Chris Risner, who helped set up the original blood drives, said last year’s push led to almost 40,000 units donated at that point and that the band embraced the concept right away.
“All I did was figure out that if you take a match to gasoline, it will ignite,” Risner said. He added that he and the band want other artists and organizations to borrow the idea and try to top it: “Please steal it and do better than we did, because, you know what, then we’re coming at you and we’re going to do even better than that. It’s just one of those things where good begets good.”
