Phil Collins Opens Up About Health, Sobriety, and His Future

Phil Collins has given one of his most candid interviews in years, speaking with broadcaster Zoe Ball about his health, his past struggles, and how he now views his legendary career. The wide-ranging conversation aired as part of the BBC’s Eras: Phil Collins series and has drawn significant attention from fans around the world.

The interview comes as Collins approaches his 75th birthday and continues to live largely out of the public eye following years of medical complications that forced him to step away from touring and drumming.

Candid Health Update

During the interview, Collins spoke frankly about the physical challenges he continues to face after multiple surgeries and long-term nerve damage. He explained that years of performing, combined with medical issues and past lifestyle choices, have taken a toll on his mobility.

Collins revealed that he now requires daily assistance and has round-the-clock care to help manage medication and recovery. While he acknowledged that his mobility is limited, he emphasized that he feels stable and well supported.

“I have had a difficult few years,” Collins told Ball, adding that many of his health problems “all caught up at once.”

Reflecting on Sobriety and Personal Change

Another major focus of the conversation was Collins’ past relationship with alcohol. He acknowledged that heavy drinking during certain periods of his life likely contributed to some of his health issues. Collins confirmed that he has now been sober for more than two years and described the change as an important turning point.

Rather than dwelling on regret, Collins framed the discussion as a moment of clarity and acceptance, noting that sobriety has allowed him to better understand his body and his limits.

Looking Back on a Historic Career

Ball also guided Collins through reflections on his six-decade career, from his early years with Genesis to his chart-dominating solo run in the 1980s and 1990s. Songs like “In the Air Tonight” and “Against All Odds” were discussed not as commercial milestones, but as emotional markers in his life.

Collins admitted that stepping away from performing was painful, especially given how central music has always been to his identity. However, he said he is at peace with no longer touring and does not see himself returning to the stage.

Is New Music Still Possible?

While Collins has previously suggested he may be finished with making new music, the interview left the door slightly open. He told Ball that he still has musical ideas and unfinished fragments, though he stopped short of promising any future releases.

Rather than committing to a comeback, Collins described the idea of creating music again as something he might explore quietly, without pressure or expectations.

A Rare and Personal Moment

Zoe Ball described the interview as intimate and reflective, noting that Collins was unusually open about both his struggles and his sense of gratitude. For longtime fans, the conversation offers a clearer picture of where the artist is today, not as a performer, but as a person navigating life after extraordinary success.

Why the Interview Matters

The Phil Collins interview with Zoe Ball stands out because of its honesty and timing. As one of the most successful musicians of his generation, Collins has often been defined by his hits and stadium tours. This conversation reframes his story around resilience, acceptance, and legacy.

For fans, it serves as both a health update and a thoughtful reflection on a career that shaped pop and rock music for decades.
