Frank Beard, the longtime drummer of ZZ Top, will not be playing the upcoming tour. The announcement of his temporary leave has sent ripples across the music community, as Beard, a pivotal member since the band’s inception, steps back due to an unspecified health issue. ZZ Top’s management conveyed the news through a social media statement, marking a significant change for the band’s current “Elevation” tour. Since this tour was set to continue over the upcoming months, Beard’s absence has necessitated a quick replacement, with John Douglas, a fellow Texan and longtime tech member, poised to fill in.

Beard's departure temporarily halts his over 55-year tenure with ZZ Top, a band he helped co-found in 1969. This powerhouse trio, renowned for a unique blend of blues and rock, became a global icon with classic tracks like “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Sharp Dressed Man.” With the signature long beards of Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons and their distinctive Texan style, ZZ Top’s influence on the rock genre has been indisputable. Their music videos were a staple of early MTV broadcasts, etching their place in the annals of rock history.

Despite the band’s resilience in the face of change, notably with bass player Dusty Hill’s passing in 2021 leading to Elwood Francis' inclusion, Beard’s absence on this tour undoubtedly changes the dynamic. John Douglas, stepping in as interim drummer, brings familiarity and capability, having previously substituted for Beard during an incident in 2002 when Beard underwent emergency surgery.

Frank Beard, despite ironically being the only member sans a beard, has been instrumental in crafting the band's tight-knit sound, vital to their identity since their debut album in 1971. His influence spans through each beat and rhythm that has long energized their sensory-rich music. For now, however, the band’s spirit pushes onward with John Douglas at the drums, ensuring no letdown in the vibrant renditions ZZ Top is famous for.
