During the On The Waterfront festival at Pier Head in Liverpool, a serious incident unfolded involving The Christians' drummer, Lionel Duke. The band was performing as a support act for musician Sting when Duke suddenly collapsed on stage two songs into their set. It was soon identified that he had suffered a cardiac arrest. The swift response by the lead singer, Garry Christian, involved calling for immediate medical assistance. In an organized and respectful manner, a privacy screen was set up around Duke as emergency responders worked quickly to resuscitate him on stage. The on-site medical team alongside event staff demonstrated commendable poise and efficiency in handling the distressing scenario.

The medical team managed to perform several rounds of CPR, reviving Duke's pulse before he was transported to Broad Green's Heart and Chest Hospital by ambulance. Garry Christian, along with the rest of the band, expressed profound gratitude to the medics from the On The Waterfront team who intervened so promptly. The Christians subsequently relayed their thanks to Sting for his heartfelt acknowledgment of the situation. Sting paused during his headline performance to update the audience on Duke's condition, encouraging everyone to keep him in their thoughts, emphasizing that “all of us are praying he’s going to be fine.”

The festival's organizers and staff were lauded for their quick action and their decision to shield Lionel Duke with a makeshift curtain, providing him with privacy and dignity during a critical moment. This was an integral part of how the event's medical response was managed, ensuring Duke received the necessary medical attention without undue public exposure or interference. Fans who attended the festival left numerous supportive messages online, expressing their concern and wishing Duke a swift recovery.

Despite the unfolding drama earlier in the evening, Sting continued with his performance upon receiving The Christians' blessing to proceed. In a touching tribute that reflected his solidarity and empathy, Sting dedicated his performance of “Fragile” to Duke and included sentiments about the drummer's health in his address to the audience. The emotional connection between Sting and both the supporting act and their fans was profoundly displayed throughout the festival.

The Christians shared updates on Duke’s condition through their social media channels, expressing their heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming messages of support they received from fans. They assured followers that they would communicate as more information became available regarding Duke’s recovery and highlighted the incredible assistance provided by the medics and festival team. Fans wrote in to express their respect for the dignity with which Duke was treated and extended their thoughts to both the drummer’s band and extended family.

This event has been deeply impactful for attendees and fans of The Christians, showcasing the critical nature of emergency response readiness at large public events. Equally, it has highlighted the compassionate and supportive network within the music community, with all involved displaying unity and resilience in the face of adversity. The incident not only testifies to the power of community support but also serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected events that can arise during live performances. The fans and music community continue to await news on Duke's recovery, hopeful for positive developments in the coming days.
