Celebrating 40 years since their breakthrough, INXS's Listen Like Thieves is receiving a reissue packed with extras that offer both nostalgia and novelty. Originally released in October 1985, this album was pivotal for the Australian rock band, marking the moment they transitioned from regional success to international acclaim. The fifth album in their discography, Listen Like Thieves not only climbed charts across the globe but also featured hit singles such as “What You Need,” which soared to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the band's first significant U.S. triumph.

INXS, comprised of Michael Hutchence, Andrew Farriss, Tim Farriss, Garry Gary Beers, Kirk Pengilly, and Jon Farriss, recorded Listen Like Thieves under the guidance of Chris Thomas in London. Thomas, known for his work with bands like The Beatles and Pink Floyd, infused the album with a striking production that combined crisp rhythms and fervent vocals, forming an appealing blend of rock and dance beats reminiscent of Duran Duran. This collaboration resulted in an album that critics described as having an edgy “plastic-soul” sound, propelling the group into a new echelon of fame.

The 40th anniversary reissue, scheduled for release on May 9 through Rhino Records, includes a variety of formats, from a deluxe 3-CD/1 LP set to more streamlined options. The standout feature of this collection is a new stereo mix by Giles Martin and Paul Hicks, which rejuvenates the original tracks while preserving their raw energy. As part of this release, fans will also get to enjoy 19 previously unheard demos and outtakes, offering a glimpse into the band's creative process. Notably, one of these treasures is a recently discovered BBC recording from a 1986 performance at London's Royal Albert Hall, a venue that hosted an audience filled with music elites like Mick Jagger and The Cult.

Essays within the deluxe edition detail how INXS's relentless touring schedule and their reputation for intense live performances expanded their fanbase beyond Australia, making Listen Like Thieves a crucial stepping stone towards their subsequent album, Kick, which would transform them into megastars.

Additional content in this commemorative release includes a thought-provoking interview by journalist Paul Sexton, providing historical context and personal anecdotes from the band, underscoring the album's significance in their career. Furthermore, the packaging features vinyl and CD editions, alongside digital and Dolby Atmos experiences, broadening accessibility for diverse audiences, both new and old.

This landmark reissue underscores INXS's ongoing influence in rock history, reminding fans of the groundbreaking sound they crafted four decades ago. The celebration of this seminal album provides a dynamic auditory and historical journey that pays homage to the band's indelible mark on music and culture. As they reflect on their past, still evidenced by their consistent sales and chart presence, INXS reinforces their legacy as icons of Australian rock.
