Rick Buckler, the former drummer for the iconic English rock band The Jam, has died at the age of 69. His passing was confirmed on social media by his former bandmates, prompting an outpouring of tributes and memories. Buckler was not just a drummer but an integral part of The Jam's sound and success during their rise in the late 1970s and early 1980s. As a key figure in The Jam, Buckler helped the band achieve a string of UK top 40 hits, with standout tracks like “Going Underground” and “A Town Called Malice.” His drumming was known for its precision and creativity, contributing significantly to the group's distinctive sound that resonated across generations.

Paul Weller, the lead singer and guitarist of The Jam, expressed his shock and sadness at Buckler's death, reminiscing about their early days together. He remembered the times they spent rehearsing in his bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking, and performing in pubs and clubs before they eventually made a record. Weller highlighted the journey they undertook as a band, going beyond their dreams and creating music that has stood the test of time. Similarly, bassist Bruce Foxton shared his devastation, emphasizing Buckler's role in shaping The Jam's music with his innovative drumming patterns.

While the cause of Buckler's death has not been disclosed, it was noted that he had canceled a spoken-word tour due to health issues shortly before his passing. Buckler's family released a statement mourning the loss of a loving husband, father, and grandfather, describing him as someone devoted to many and who will be greatly missed. The statement noted that Buckler passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Woking.

The Jam, formed in Woking, Surrey, in 1972, quickly became a prominent name in the punk and new wave movements. Their music often included social and political themes, challenging issues like police brutality and government policies. The band's influence extended beyond music, playing a significant role in reinvigorating mod culture in the UK. At the height of their popularity, The Jam released six studio albums, culminating in their last release, The Gift, in 1982, which led to their disbandment following personal decisions from Weller.

After The Jam broke up, Buckler remained active in the music scene. He formed a band called Time UK with fellow musicians and later created a tribute band, From the Jam, reflecting his enduring passion for the music he helped create. Buckler's legacy as a musician is undisputed, with his work inspiring both his contemporaries and the generations that followed. Rhoda Dakar, the lead singer of The Bodysnatchers, another band from the same era, praised Buckler's contributions, stating that a band is only as good as its drummer.
