Jens Lekman, the acclaimed Swedish singer-songwriter, is set to return with his much-anticipated new studio album titled Songs for Other People’s Weddings, marking his first solo release in eight years. The album is scheduled to drop on September 12, 2025, under the Secretly Canadian label, and serves as a companion piece to a novel of the same name by the best-selling author David Levithan. This unique collaboration explores themes of love and weddings, inspired by Lekman’s own experiences as a wedding singer, a role he inadvertently embraced following the popularity of his 2004 song “If You Ever Need a Stranger (To Sing at Your Wedding).”

The new album sees its narrative woven with fictional elements, focusing on the character J, an unlucky-in-love musician. This concept allowed Lekman to explore the genre of narrative albums, taking inspiration from iconic works like Frank Sinatra’s Watertown. Lekman himself has described the endeavor as a “rock opera,” a label he initially deemed forbidden yet ultimately liberating, a testament to his creative exploration into genres that were previously outside his comfort zone. Songs for Other People’s Weddings promises a musical storytelling experience with tracks like “Candy From a Stranger,” which is accompanied by a Rena Johnson-edited video featuring clips from various weddings where Lekman performed.

In addition to the album release, Lekman is embarking on a North American tour to support the new record. The tour kicks off on November 8, 2025, in Minneapolis, followed by stops in major cities such as Chicago, Toronto, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, concluding on December 3, 2025. This series of performances not only marks a celebration of his new work but also a reunion with fans across the continent after years away from the touring circuit. With the promise of new music combined with fan-favorite hits, the concerts are expected to celebrate Jens Lekman's unique blend of indie pop and heartfelt storytelling.

The tracklist for Songs for Other People’s Weddings offers a rich tapestry of themes and emotions, beginning with “The First Lovesong” and concluding aptly with “The Last Lovesong.” Other notable tracks include “A Tuxedo Sewn for Two,” “Speak to Me in Music,” and collaborations featuring artists like Matilda Sargren on tracks such as “Two Little Pigs” and “I Want to Want You Again.” These collaborations add layers of depth to the album, enhancing its narrative quality and showcasing Lekman's continuous evolution as a musician.

This new project follows Lekman’s 2017 album Life Will See You Now and a 2019 collaborative work with Annika Norlin titled Correspondence. Additionally, Lekman reissued some of his earlier works in 2022, reinventing beloved albums like Oh You’re So Silent Jens and Night Falls Over Kortedala, which included redux versions, previously unreleased songs, and cassette diaries. These reissues were well-received, reaffirming his enduring influence in the indie music scene.

Jens Lekman's return with Songs for Other People’s Weddings undeniably positions him once again at the forefront of innovative indie music. By bridging personal experience with fiction and collaborating with literary and musical talents, Lekman continues to push boundaries, creating work that resonates deeply with audiences. Fans eagerly anticipate the rich storytelling and emotional depth characteristic of his work, confident that both the album and the accompanying tour will leave a lasting impression on the music landscape.

This new release is poised to garner significant attention, both for its creative artistry and the unique narrative structure housed within its tracks. The continued collaboration with figures like David Levithan speaks to Lekman's commitment to cross-disciplinary exploration, reinforcing his reputation as a multifaceted artist willing to innovate and rejuvenate his sound in meaningful ways.
