Canadian indie musician Mac DeMarco is set to release his seventh studio album, “Guitar,” on August 22 via Mac’s Record Label. Known for his distinct style and unconventional album structures, DeMarco's latest work marks his return to more conventional guitar-and-vocals compositions after recent experimental projects such as the instrumental “Five Easy Hot Dogs” and the expansive 199-track “One Wayne G.” The new album, articulated entirely by DeMarco in both writing and production, reflects his personal journey and current life experiences, developed during November 2024 in his Los Angeles home.

The announcement of “Guitar” is paired with the release of the lead single, “Home.” This track beautifully encapsulates DeMarco’s soft, introspective side while evoking a sense of nostalgia. It portrays his reflections on the concept of home, inspired by both his birthplace in British Columbia and his current residence in Los Angeles. The music video mirrors this theme, capturing serene visuals of DeMarco canoeing near his family’s home in Canada, interspersed with glimpses of local wildlife, including geese, symbolizing his bond with his origins.

Like many of his past works, “Guitar” is a true solo endeavor, with DeMarco handling various aspects of its creation—from writing and recording to mixing and shooting music videos—although he enlisted David Ives for mastering. In a press statement, DeMarco expressed his belief that “Guitar” is the most accurate representation of his current self, making it both a personal and public milestone in his musical journey.

In support of the album, DeMarco is preparing for an extensive tour that spans multiple continents. Starting from the U.S., the tour will move through the U.K., Europe, and into the southern and midwestern parts of the States, plus Asia in 2026. Fans around the world can anticipate live performances of DeMarco's new music, with several support acts from his own record label, including the likes of Mock Media, Tex Crick, and others. The tour encompasses prominent venues such as New York's Radio City Music Hall and The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, highlighting the anticipated reception of “Guitar.”

The album, “Guitar,” consists of 12 tracks written to convey a variety of moods and resonate with DeMarco's fresh creative perspectives. The specific tracklist includes titles like “Shining,” “Sweeter,” and “Rooster,” among others. Each track is expected to exhibit DeMarco’s aptitude for crafting music that is both laid-back and elaborately thought out—a balance that has won him devotion from a wide fan base and traction across digital platforms, especially with younger audiences.

DeMarco’s return to a more guitar-centric sound coincides with a period of personal reflection and re-evaluation, as he detours away from more abstract, experimental output. “I’m excited to share this music and I look forward to playing these songs as many places as I’m able,” he conveyed, stressing that this body of work closely aligns with where he stands today. The album is shaped by the intimate settings it was recorded in, combining thoughtful lyrics with harmonious, easy-going soundscapes typical of DeMarco's aesthetic.

For fans and media alike, this opportunity to hear DeMarco’s introspective sound is enticing, promising a blend of familiar tranquility with new, introspective insights. As he navigates this pivotal moment in his career, “Guitar” offers a window into DeMarco’s inner world—revealing both the artist’s growth and his enduring connection to his musical roots. As the August release date approaches, anticipation builds around what this new phase will reveal, both in its recorded form and through the energy of live performances.
