Iron Maiden fans worldwide have just witnessed an emotional chapter in the band's storied history, as longtime drummer Nicko McBrain played his last show in Brazil. A veteran of the band since 1982, McBrain has been a formidable presence behind the drum kit for Iron Maiden and a key contributor to their iconic sound. His retirement from touring marks the end of an era, but not his complete departure from music as he plans to remain connected to the band through various projects. His final performance at Allianz Parque in São Paulo was a powerful send-off, with fans chanting his name as Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson paid tribute to McBrain's profound impact over more than four decades.

McBrain's decision to retire from touring was not taken lightly, especially considering his long and storied career with Iron Maiden. Having joined the band to replace original drummer Clive Burr, McBrain became a staple of the group, playing on every album since 1983's “Piece of Mind.” His adept drumming and the unique flair he brought to the band helped to propel Iron Maiden to unmatched global success. In his retirement announcement, McBrain reflected on the incredible journey he experienced with Iron Maiden, expressing gratitude for the support and love from fans, as well as the camaraderie within the band itself. Although he will no longer tour, McBrain assured fans he would continue working on music and various personal ventures.

His last show was played in Brazil, marking a significant moment for both McBrain and Iron Maiden, who have held a special bond with Brazil since their first Rock in Rio performance in 1985. The performance in front of 90,000 fans in São Paulo was fittingly described as poetic by Maiden’s longtime manager, Rod Smallwood, as it capped the “Future Past” world tour with a potent display of affection and admiration from both the band and its fans. As Iron Maiden bids farewell to their beloved drummer, they also look forward to their 50th anniversary celebration, “The Run For Your Lives Tour,” scheduled to commence in May 2025.

Continuing the momentum and ensuring the band's legacy remains strong, Iron Maiden has announced Simon Dawson as McBrain's successor on the drums. Dawson, who is no stranger to Maiden’s musical family, has built a rapport through his involvement with Steve Harris's side project, British Lion. Dawson's familiarity with Maiden's sound and his experience across global stages make him a fitting choice to step into the limelight as Iron Maiden's touring drummer. The band's confidence in Dawson reiterates their commitment to maintaining the integrity and vigor that Maiden is renowned for.

In preparation for their upcoming tour, Iron Maiden released a statement that reflected excitement over their future and the inclusion of Dawson. His extensive experience with British Lion and previous collaborations with Steve Harris position him as a seamless fit. As Maiden gears up for their upcoming tour, the transition promises renewed energy while retaining the signature sound that fans have come to cherish over the years.
