The legendary punk guitarist Brian James, co-founder of the influential band The Damned, has been laid to rest in a unique burial at sea, fulfilling his final wish as outlined in his will. Known for his pioneering role in the punk music movement, James passed away at the age of 70 on March 6, 2025, with a career that spanned six decades. His passing prompted a private ceremony on April 28, where he was buried on the sea floor off the coast of Newhaven in East Sussex, England. His widow Minna, son Charlie, daughter-in-law Alicia, and nine close friends gathered for the emotional event, taking a three-hour boat trip from Eastbourne, which was followed by a memorial service at a church near his home in Brighton.

Brian James's impact on the punk music scene was monumental, as he played a significant role in shaping the genre's early stages. The Damned's debut single, “New Rose,” released in 1976, was the first of its kind from a British punk band, setting a precedent for the music industry. The band’s first two albums, “Damned Damned Damned” and “Music for Pleasure,” were largely penned by James, encapsulating the raw energy and defiance of punk that resonated with a generation. Aside from his work with The Damned, James also co-founded The Lords of the New Church, a band that continued to influence the rock genre with hits like “Open Your Eyes” and “Dance with Me.”

James's desire for a burial at sea highlights his enduring connection to the spirit of punk, which he carried throughout his life and in his afterlife wishes. This choice reflects his individuality and commitment to breaking conventional norms, a theme central to the ethos of punk music. The burial, approved with a certificate from the Marine Management Organisation, was atypical but fulfilled James's longstanding wish to “sleep with the fishes,” as one source poignantly noted. This act of laying to rest aligned perfectly with his lifelong narrative of authenticity and rebellion against mainstream conventions.

Minna, his widow, reminisced about their long relationship, recalling how they had been together since she was 18, making the ceremony profoundly emotional. James's death marks the end of an era for those who have followed his music and were inspired by his contributions to punk and rock music. Known for his unwavering creativity, James also collaborated with notable artists like Iggy Pop and Wayne Kramer, further solidifying his legacy in music history. His involvement with supergroups such as the Racketeers alongside members from bands like Guns N’ Roses and the Police underlined his prestige and influence in the rock community.

The impact of Brian James on the punk music scene continues to be celebrated, particularly through performances like the 2022 reunion with the original members of The Damned. His contributions have transcended music, finding their way into film and television soundtracks, thereby influencing various aspects of cultural media. As fans and friends remember him fondly, his death has sparked tributes from former bandmates, like Raymond ‘Captain Sensible’ Burns, who acknowledged James as the driving force behind The Damned’s creation, cementing their place in music history.
