Jack Black made a grand return to Saturday Night Live (SNL) on April 5, 2025, and brought with him a delightful parody that melded humor, music, and nostalgia perfectly. The iconic actor and singer showed off his chops in a multitude of sketches, including a notable play on My Chemical Romance's “Welcome to the Black Parade.” This particular sketch was titled “Goth Kid on Vacation,” and it not only paid homage to the theatrical flair of the emo genre but also infused it with a comedic twist that only Black could masterfully balance. The character he portrayed was a delightful spoof of the angst-ridden, misunderstood teen archetype, while simultaneously offering a humorous critique on cultural juxtapositions.

In the “Goth Kid on Vacation” sketch, Black donned attire reminiscent of Emo fashion, a throwback to My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way’s signature style from the “Black Parade” era. The sketch commenced with SNL cast members Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim as members of a Jamaican reggae band. They musically teased the goth kid, played by Michael Longfellow, who experiences the trials of retaining his dark aesthetic while vacationing in sunny, cheerful Jamaica. This setting provided the perfect backdrop for the parody, combining the island’s vibrant culture with the dark, dramatic flair that characterizes emo music. Black’s parody involved reworking the lyrics of “Welcome to the Black Parade” to fit this theme, injecting reggae rhythms into the emo anthem.

The skit had multiple layers of humor, as it parodied not only the music of the era but also the dichotomy between the dark and dramatic persona of emo culture and the serene, joyful energy of a tropical getaway. Black’s character amusingly recounted how his parents took him to Jamaica for spring break, yet he remains clad in black, reluctant to embrace the tropical paradise. His comedic performance breathed new life into the familiar tune, showcasing his ability to blend musical talent with comedic timing seamlessly. Adding further comedy was Black’s self-aware parody, poking fun at the adolescent mindset with lines about choosing solitude with graphic novels over beach outings.

The entire episode managed to pay tribute to the show's rich history of hosting musical legends while carving its new space in pop culture. The episode was further elevated by performances from legendary musical guests Elton John and Brandi Carlile, who were promoting music from their new collaborative project. Thus, Black’s involvement not only served as nostalgia for long-time emo fans but also added to the night’s musical splendor, further solidifying SNL as a timeless platform for blending music with comedic sketches.
