The legendary Keith Richards has been recognized with the inaugural Connecticut Governor's Award of Excellence. This award honors the creativity, passion, and generosity of Connecticut residents, and Richards epitomizes these values. The award was presented by Governor Ned Lamont at the Westport Library, where Richards, who has resided in Connecticut since 1985, received both a custom-designed medallion and a proclamation offering him the “Key to the State.” Richards has kept a home in Connecticut for 40 years, a fact that underscores his long-standing connection to the state.

Richards' relationship with Connecticut began when he moved from New York City to provide his children with a healthier environment, away from the bustling city life. Settling in the serene suburb of Weston, he has maintained a prominent presence in the community, contributing to local initiatives and organizations such as SPHERE and The Prospector Theater, both of which support individuals with disabilities. Governor Lamont commended Richards not only for his musical achievements but also for his impactful charitable work, highlighting his support for arts, education, and community endeavors throughout Connecticut.

The award ceremony was a blend of music and heartfelt speeches. Lamont, a fan of the Rolling Stones, played snippets of their songs during his speech, using “Start Me Up” and “You Can't Always Get What You Want” as metaphors for political challenges and inspirations. He humorously acknowledged Richards as one of his “political advisors,” reflecting on how the musician's work has been a part of his political journey.

Richards, known worldwide for his musical contributions with iconic hits like “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” and “Gimme Shelter,” expressed his gratitude to Connecticut, acknowledging the state as a significant part of his and his family’s life. In his acceptance speech, Richards emphasized the importance of community and libraries, calling them the “great equalizer” in society. This acknowledgment resonated with many, as libraries are often seen as accessible centers for knowledge and community.

The event also celebrated Richards' broader contributions to music and culture, extending beyond his sound to his philanthropic efforts. Not only has Richards been a beacon in rock music history for nearly seven decades, but his life in Connecticut showcases his commitment to supporting local causes. His accolades include inductions into various halls of fame and recognition as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time.
