What’s New in the Re-Release

On October 31, 2025, Rhino Records will drop the 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Heartbeat City, originally released in 1984.

This expanded version will include:

  • A remastered version of the original album.

  • Rare studio material: early mixes, demos, alternate versions, and previously unreleased tracks such as early versions of “Stranger Eyes,” “It’s Not the Night,” and “Jacki” (the track that evolved into “Heartbeat City”).

  • B-sides and remixes.

  • A live performance: a full concert from September 11, 1984 at The Summit in Houston. This live set includes hits like “You Might Think,” “Drive,” and versions of “Candy-O” and “My Best Friend’s Girl” previously unavailable on CD.

The set will be available in a 4-CD plus 1-LP format.

Why Heartbeat City Matters in 2025

This re-release isn’t just nostalgia. It underscores how Heartbeat City represents a turning point in The Cars’ career:

  1. Commercial peak: It was their fifth studio album and stripped away some of the New Wave rough edges in favor of a cleaner, more radio-friendly production. The album reached No. 3 on charts, becoming one of their biggest sellers.

  2. Hit singles & MTV impact: Songs like “Drive” and “You Might Think” weren’t just chart successes; their music videos became staples on MTV and pushed The Cars further into mainstream visibility.

  3. Production signature: Produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange instead of their earlier producer, the album’s polished style—layered vocals, synths, and programmed drums—became a hallmark of mid-80s pop rock.

What’s Worth Digging Into

For fans and newcomers alike, here’s what makes the Deluxe Edition especially compelling:

  • Unreleased/early material — hearing tracks in their demo or early mix form gives insight into how songs evolved in the studio.

  • Live show — the Houston concert captures The Cars at a potent moment, performing new material alongside classics, and now many tracks are newly available on CD.

  • Alternate takes/remixes — they offer texture: different arrangements, edits, and mixes that show how production decisions shaped the final sound.

Context & Legacy

Heartbeat City arrived at a moment when The Cars were moving from their more experimental New Wave beginnings into mainstream pop rock territory, but without losing their identity. It helped position them as one of the bands that bridged classic rock, pop, and the emerging video era. The reissue comes as part of an ongoing trend of classic albums being reexamined, with restored or previously unreleased material, new formats, and deluxe experiences for fans.

Who Will Love This & How to Listen

  • Die-hard fans will appreciate the unreleased content and the live show.

  • Collectors will want the physical Deluxe Edition (4 CDs + LP) for its packaging and rarity.

  • New listeners who know The Cars via “Drive” or “You Might Think” will find this a great retrospective introduction.

  • Best listening modes: headphones for the detail in demos & early mixes; high-quality systems or vinyl for the album’s lush production.
