Halestorm, the critically acclaimed rock band, has unleashed their first single of 2025, “Darkness Always Wins,” as a stirring prelude to their upcoming album. Produced by the esteemed Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb, this track marks a significant departure from their previous work. Known for collaborations with big names such as Chris Stapleton and Brandi Carlile, Cobb has infused a fresh energy into Halestorm's work, blending hard rock with a more cinematic style.

The track “Darkness Always Wins” presents a complex narrative that does not seek to provide a message of hope or despair. Lzzy Hale, the lead singer and guitarist, describes it as a reflection of reality—a commentary on the perpetual cycle of history and morality. She intriguingly notes, “Evil prevails and the good depart first,” a somber reminder of history's dark turns. Despite its seemingly bleak theme, the song carries an undercurrent of resilience and perseverance—urging listeners to keep their fires burning and to pass the torch to future generations. The intention is not to assure victory within a lifetime but to sustain the struggle for what is right and just.

The creation of “Darkness Always Wins” was a unique process that revolved around spontaneity and organic development rather than structured demos. This spontaneity is reflective of Cobb's influence, allowing the band to tap into raw creativity in the moment. Hale describes the recording process as a refreshing departure from the norm—eschewing their typical structured assembly line production in favor of something more emotionally charged. This approach has resulted in an album that feels like the band returning to its roots, akin to their early days spent creating music in the basement with boundless enthusiasm and fewer constraints.

“Darkness Always Wins” showcases Hale's powerhouse vocal range, beginning with an 80s power ballad feel before transitioning into heavier riffs, driven by Joe Hottinger's intense guitar work. The thematic depth combined with the musical arrangement offers a bold and sweeping soundscape, expected to resonate powerfully in a live setting. Halestorm’s upcoming performances will include a European tour with Iron Maiden and a North American tour supporting Volbeat. Furthermore, they will participate in Black Sabbath's farewell show, which promises to be a notable event on their schedule.
