Sonic Youth, the seminal alternative rock band, is once again opening the doors to their highly anticipated Reverb shop, offering fans and collectors a rare opportunity to own pieces of the band's storied musical history. This is the third time Sonic Youth has teamed up with Reverb, having initially launched their shop in 2018 followed by a subsequent reopening in 2022. This latest iteration of the shop, set to open on May 21, 2025, promises a diverse array of items that are not only valuable for their historical significance but also for their intimate connections to the personal journeys of the band's members, particularly Lee Ranaldo.

Lee Ranaldo's first-ever electric guitar, a Hagstrom II, is among the most renowned pieces up for grabs. This guitar holds a special place in Ranaldo’s musical lineage as it was instrumental in shaping his early sound. Played primarily in his high school years, the Hagstrom II played a pivotal role in his formative playing style before he traded it for a Fender Super Reverb amp, setting a tonal foundation that he adhered to throughout his career. The emotional value of this guitar is heightened by the fact that it returned to him after many years, allowing fans a chance to own a piece of this touching story which marked the beginning of Ranaldo’s journey into the music world.

The gear collection in this reopening includes other historically significant items. For example, the Ludwig Phase II Synthesizer, an iconic piece responsible for the ethereal soundscapes heard in Sonic Youth’s track “The Diamond Sea” from their 1995 album Washing Machine, stands out. Another coveted item is the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase, a dual-phase shifter pedal which contributed to the unique sounds on albums like A Thousand Leaves and Washing Machine. A particularly sentimental piece is an acoustic guitar that Ranaldo performed with at Neil Young’s esteemed Bridge School Benefit concerts, complete with violin and cello bows used during those performances.

Beyond these instruments, the shop conveys a deeper connection to Sonic Youth's pioneering music making. Items like a custom-built parametric EQ used on their debut album, Confusion Is Sex, and Urei studio monitors originally from the New York Knitting Factory, embody the experimental backbone of the band. Moreover, smaller, quirky items such as electronic tablas and zither, alongside stamp pads used by Ranaldo for graphing chord diagrams, illustrate the band's hands-on approach to music creation and notation.

Since its inception, the Sonic Youth Reverb shop has been a treasure trove that allows fans unparalleled access to the band’s hardware—each piece carrying its own unique backstory. The 2018 launch offered over 200 items including test pressings and used stage and studio equipment. By 2022, the shop went a step further by releasing analog tape reels and other memorabilia. These past initiatives indicate Sonic Youth’s appreciation for analog technology and their desire to inspire new artists by passing on the tools that once fueled their creative projects.
