Bill Walton, the celebrated Hall of Fame NBA center, was known both for his illustrious basketball career and his profound admiration for the Grateful Dead. Walton's dedication to the band went beyond being a fan; he attended over 800 Grateful Dead or Dead-related shows during his lifetime—often spotted in the front rows. His deep-seated connection with the band is now being highlighted through an auction that displays memorabilia from his personal collection, revealing the extent of his devotion and friendship with the band. This auction, managed by Hunt Auctions, commenced recently and will continue until June 11, allowing fans and collectors to bid on these historical treasures.

The auction features an impressive variety of Walton's personal mementos encompassing different phases of his life and career. Among the sports-related items are jerseys from Walton's time at UCLA and the Trail Blazers, his 1986 Boston Celtics championship ring, and even his 1970 passport. However, the memorabilia related to the Grateful Dead occupies a substantial portion of the auction catalog, spanning 16 pages, and showcases a rich trove of the band-related items. Notably, the collection includes limited-edition prints of the “Europe '72” album covers, tour books from as early as 1986, and artwork used in The Grateful Dead Movie. A unique offering is a drum cymbal autographed by the band’s eighties lineup, accompanied by a cheeky inscription from Jerry Garcia himself.

Walton's presence at the Grateful Dead's iconic events was also immortalized when he took on the role of “Father Time” at their New Year's Eve shows starting in 1999. The auction includes four of his elaborately themed cloaks from these events. Furthermore, memorabilia such as his backstage passes to the Grateful Dead's 2015 Fare Thee Well shows, alongside a printed speech he delivered at one of the concerts, add emotional and historical depth to the collection.

In addition to Grateful Dead memorabilia, Walton's collection will interest enthusiasts of different musical acts, including Fleetwood Mac, Phish, and The Eagles, as well as iconic items such as a Mick Fleetwood signed version of the *Rumours* album. Walton's extensive and varied collection true to his larger-than-life persona also includes autographs from managers and road crew members, making some pieces extremely rare and desirable.

Walton's significant involvement in preserving and celebrating basketball history and music culture extends beyond sports and entertainment; he was also an active philanthropist. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the Orthopedic Department at the University of California San Diego, underscoring Walton’s lifetime commitment to giving back to the community.

Walton's influence in the world of basketball, acknowledged by his leading the Portland Trail Blazers to their sole NBA championship in 1977 and his MVP award thereafter, was as profound as his presence in the Grateful Dead community. His contribution to both fields is exemplified by the items displayed in the auction, from sports accolades to artistic memorabilia.

This auction is not merely a sale but a celebration of Walton's multifaceted life. Collectors, sports fans, and Deadheads alike have the opportunity to own a piece of the legacy he left behind, a tangible connection to a man who traversed the worlds of music and sports with unparalleled zeal. The auction also serves as a poignant tribute to Walton who, after a courageous battle with cancer, left behind not only a rich legacy of sportsmanship but also a vibrant cultural impact evidenced by these extraordinary items now open for public acquisition.
