Guns N' Roses have embarked on a momentous journey through the Middle East, and their recent performance in Abu Dhabi proved to be a particularly historic event. The iconic band, known for its powerful rock anthems and dynamic live shows, stopped by the Etihad Arena as part of their “Because What You Want & What You Get Are Two Completely Different Things” tour. This performance was marked by the live debut of their cover of “Human Being,” a song by the New York Dolls, and was a heartfelt tribute to the late David Johansen, an influential figure in Axl Rose's musical development. This performance was a highlight in a setlist filled with both classic hits and rare gems, showcasing the band's enduring talent and appeal.

The concert in Abu Dhabi marked Guns N’ Roses' eighth show on their current tour. The band, led by frontman Axl Rose alongside legendary guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, was rounded out by keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese, guitarist Richard Fortus, and their newly recruited drummer Isaac Carpenter. The tour has been noteworthy not only for its celebration of their classic sound but also for venturing into uncharted territories. During the Abu Dhabi show, the band introduced several tour debuts in addition to “Human Being,” including “Attitude” by the Misfits, “Reckless Life” from their sophomore album, *Lies*, and the 2023 single “The General.”

The performance of “Human Being” was particularly moving, given Guns N’ Roses' long-standing admiration for the New York Dolls. Axl Rose has often credited David Johansen, the Dolls' frontman, as a significant influence on his style and stage presence. Although Guns N’ Roses recorded their cover of “Human Being” for their 1993 album *The Spaghetti Incident?*, the track had never been performed live before this tour. Their decision to do so now, in Abu Dhabi, underscores a renewed commitment to honor the legacy of their rock forebears, offering fans a unique blend of nostalgia and innovation.

In addition to these debuts, the band delivered an array of beloved hits that have defined their career, such as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” and “Paradise City.” They also performed covers of Bob Dylan's “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and Wings’ “Live and Let Die,” further demonstrating their ability to merge their hard rock style with influences from across the rock spectrum. The concert also included deeper tracks such as “Used to Love Her,” a song they last performed in 2018, showcasing their willingness to dive into their extensive and diverse discography.

The Abu Dhabi performance not only reflected the band’s past glories but also illustrated their ongoing evolution. The camaraderie among the band members was palpable, marking a stark contrast to the well-documented tensions of the past. They performed with a level of enthusiasm and energy that indicates a band still very much in love with performing and with each other. Axl Rose's powerful vocals, complemented by Slash's legendary guitar solos, filled the Etihad Arena, creating an atmosphere where the audience was fully engaged with every note.

Their willingness to revisit and reinvigorate covers of influential songs like “Human Being” demonstrates a respect for the genre's history, while their inclusion of rare tracks alongside perennial favorites keeps their live shows both fresh and exciting. As they continue to tour, Guns N’ Roses prove that they are not merely resting on past achievements but are actively shaping their legacy, ensuring that their music remains as vital and electric as ever.
