Voivod, the iconic sci-fi heavy metal band from Canada, is entering a new creative phase with the development of their first-ever official video game, “Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior.” Set within their distinct dystopian universe, the game is a collaborative effort with Chaosmonger Studio, known for their skilled translation of musical and narrative themes into digital formats. This game brings to life Voivod's legendary albums through interactive media, offering players an immersive journey in a surreal, post-apocalyptic world. The rich, retro pixel-art aesthetic presents a classic 90's vibe, complete with a unique blending of metal music and retro gaming elements, ensuring an authentic Voivodian experience.

“Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior” is a run-and-gun Metroidvania action-adventure game teeming with mutated biomechanical foes and inspired by the band's conceptual albums. Players take on the role of the Voivod, a warrior lost amid a nuclear nightmare, guided by “Nothingface,” his disembodied mind, as he fights to reclaim fragments of his consciousness. The game’s narrative stitches together the vast expanses of Voivod’s musical universe, taking players through surreal landscapes filled with chaos and cosmic horror. Each environment is crafted to reflect the band's unique sci-fi aesthetic, allowing both longstanding fans and newcomers to experience the band's thematic depth firsthand.

The game's development is steeped in collaboration, with Voivod’s members actively contributing to various aspects of the creative process. Michel “Away” Langevin, the drummer, brings his artistic talents to the game's visual design, while guitarist Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain plays a key role in adapting the band’s music for the game’s internal soundtrack. Denis “Snake” Bélanger provides the voice for the protagonist, infusing the game’s storyline with his distinctive vocal presence. Additionally, bassist Dominic “Rocky” Laroche aids the development by providing gameplay feedback, ensuring each element aligns with the band's artistic ethos. Each member's involvement underscores the project’s dedication to authenticity and its tribute to Voivod's legacy.

The game promises players a deep sense of exploration and fast-paced combat, incorporating minor RPG elements such as weapon upgrades and tailored abilities. Players can expect to face epic bosses inspired by the iconic artwork found on Voivod's album covers. The game’s soundtrack, crafted by Mongrain and composer Yann Latour, is designed to echo the raw energy and signature sound of early Voivod tracks, adding another layer of immersion to the players’ experience. The project’s soundtrack and visual direction pay homage to the band’s vibrant history and their impact on the heavy metal genre over decades.

Currently, the game is being funded through Kickstarter, inviting fans to participate in its creation and offering them a variety of exclusive rewards. These range from digital copies of the game to special collector's editions, and even opportunities to become part of the game as an NPC or beta tester. As the game progresses towards its expected release in 2026, it aims to expand its scope with additional areas, enemies, and deeper storylines, depending on the level of support received during its crowdfunding phase.

The launch of “Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior” coincides with several other major projects for the band. They are working on a new concept album that delves into their characteristic lyrical narratives, as well as planning a global tour scheduled for 2025. The tour includes a remarkable performance with the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec in Canada, reflecting the band’s continued influence and innovative spirit. Concurrently, fans can look forward to in-depth explorations of Voivod’s storied past through a detailed biography and a comprehensive documentary, both scheduled for release later this year.
